I'm facing problems with PPTP where after a period of usage the link would stop working and the log shows the following:

Jan 4 16:48:49 wrt user.warn kernel: unknown GRE version 5
Jan 4 16:48:49 wrt user.warn kernel: unknown GRE version 5
Jan 4 16:48:50 wrt user.warn kernel: unknown GRE version 5
Jan 4 16:48:50 wrt user.warn kernel: unknown GRE version 5
Jan 4 16:48:50 wrt user.warn kernel: unknown GRE version 5

But I do not know what it means or how to fix it.

I'm using a WRT54Gv2 and recently switched to Tomato v1.02.0931 with a full reset from HyperWRT + Thibor15c where I've not had this problem before.

Aside from moving back to Thibor15c, any suggestions on how to troubleshoot and fix this?

    Thank you.

Settings are default from a VRAM erase. I've flashed Thibor15c and Tomato v1.02.0931 back and forth a few times to check and each time with a VRAM erase after each flash.

Thibor15c is able to maintain a PPTP connection while Tomato would stop working after a period with the "user.warn kernel: unknown GRE version 5" error in the logs.

Presently I'm now back to Thibor15c.

Would suggest contacting the author of Tomato. I is quite responsive to problems and working with folks. He can be reached via email. See bottom of the Tomato firmware download page for his email address. This is the best way to contact Jon when it looks like a problem with the firmware.
