Problem upgrading a WRT54GC

I just bought a WRT54GC router, and wanted to upgrade the firmware to the latest version available from Linksys.

While I was upgrading, my web interface look as if it stalled. So I refreshed the page , then I saw a status bar going from 0 to 100%. Then the process stalled there again.

At that time, I was able to ping the router, but not to get to the Internet. When I trying to get access to the router again, the web password was not working at all. I tryed the default, and the new one I put instead of it to no avail.

I try reseting the router (reset button for over 10 seconds), but it did not help.

The next step I have in mind is to get the router where I bought it, and get a new one.

But is there any other mean of getting it to work again?

I will return the router and exchange it.

But I have a question concerning the image upgrade.

Normally upgrade firmware files are in .BIN ending. The GC firmware is a .IMG file. Does thiis file is really the new format used by Linksys, or there is another layer of compression? I'm asking, because .IMG files are also seen as disk image files.
