Problems connecting B card to WRT54GL

    Hello all

    Yesterday I bought a WRT54GL v1.1 w/ firmware 4.30.7.

I have an old DLINK DWL-650+ (802.11b) card in my laptop.

When I try to connect to the linksys, I can see the SSID broadcasted ok, but when trying to connect to it, it just goes into endless loops of reconnecting (Signal/Quality graphs most of the time do not show anything)

I managed to connect to the router ONCE, for ~20 secs and then the connection was dropped.

I tried the RTS/Frag threshold config to 2304, etc.. no use..

I accused the dlink for the problem, but the card can connect to two other 802.11g routers (NetGear and DLINK).

Has anyone encountered a similar behavior ?

    Thanks in advance.
It seems that I could be returning the linksys and buying a DeadLink instead ???

What security is being used on the WRT54GL? Does your adapter support the same security type?

I was using WEP/64bits, and suspected the issue.

But then I removed it (no security) and enabled SSID broadcast.

Tried fondling with the channel, the only time that I succeeded in connecting for 20secs was on channel6.

Also, I have configured the thresholds as the LinkSys service girl wanted, didn't help.

I have tried also configuring the thresholds in the device driver of my cardbus adapter (dlink dwl650+), didn't help.

Tomorrow I'm bringing another WRT54GL (v1.0), another Cisco 802.11b card, and another laptop (IBM T42) to do a crosscheck to see if:

    1. My router is defective.
    2. OR I can connect to it using another 802.11g adapter.
    3. OR I can connect to it using another 802.11b adapter.

I think I have already proved that the dlink adapter is OK, (since it connected fine to a NetGear and a DLINK router).

The f/w version of the linksys is a 4.30.7 which is the newest.
Also the dlink adapter is upgraded to the latest driver (~2003)

Any other ideas would be appreciated..

    Thanks in advance.

Is your preamble set to Long in the router and on the card?

Have you tried B-only mode? I have come across a few 1st generation 802.11b adapters not working with a WRT54G in the past except when the router is in B-only mode.

    Thanks guys for the answers:

I burned the linksys with Thibor15c to have the ability to fool around with a few patameters..

There was an improvement, the adapter now connects to the router for ~40secs. I can ping other PCs on my network with hellish "request time outs" and "5000ms delays" sometimes, it's not usable.

    1. Tried long and short preamble (ofcource configuring also the dlink adapter) - no change.

    2. Tried running on B only mode, no change..

    3. Tried tampering with the thresholds a bit more, no change..
