    ok guys here goes nothing...

i just recently switched from a WRT54G v5 to a WRT54GL v1.1 because of the problems i was having with the G... well, my problems have not gotten any better but i dont know what to do... my laptop will no grab an IP thats in my assigned range when i set it to DHCP and if i set it statically then i cannot connect to the internet... im not sure if this is the router or the computer but im having the same problem on 2 different machines... my laptop grabs a random 169.254.x.x address and then tells me there is limited to no connectivity... my dads laptop can see the router but when he goes to connect it just tells him that there is a problem and that it cant connect... my wired machine works fine with no problems with anything...

i just dont know what to do now, im totally lost...

please, any help would be greatly appreciated!

    thanks......

do u hv any WEP or WPA wireless security? changed channel / SSID and set SSID broadcast to enable (for starters)? wireless MAC filter disabled? computer sees other networks and connects to them successfully?

If u dont hv WEP or WPA, enable them. Use WEP 64 bit (type a passphrase, click generate and note down the 10 digit key1 info and use that key1 to connect to ur signal).... or use WPA (type a passphrase and use it to connect to the signal as network key... ensure u hv XP SP2).

there is no security and its set to broadcast... Wireless MAC Filter is diasbled... i dont have any other networks to connect to right now but it has in the past...

is turning security on gonna fix the problem? i dont really want to run it because when i have people over i dont want to have to look that information up to give them, i would rather they just be able to connect and be done...

im using Media Center as thats what came installed on my Laptop when i got it... its fully updated and was running OK until about a week ago and i have been having these problems ever since...

(just checked my channel settings [Channel 1 on the Laptop] and the router was on Channel 6 but changing that back didnt fix my problem... i also tried changing the SSID and setting up a new connection through Windows and i get the same problem of a random IP with limited connectivity)
