Hi. I'm new to this forum b/c i've been experiencing connection issues with my router (in sig). I got this router maybe 2 weeks ago. Added the latest version of Tomato as soon as i got it. All is well for like the first day or so. Then i started experiencing wireless connection issues such as slow speeds to bad signal quality n rssi?

i have it set as an access point, G only, channel 1, wpa personal tkip security.

wireless settings, i have most at default. Enhanced RX Sensitivity is enabled, transmit power is 45.

other than port forwarding and static ip, theres nothing else ive changed.

like i can start like this...

2 different laptops... one HP ZT3000, one HP TX1000.

Starting point - 5' away from router.
    ZT3000 -30dBm n 50 quality
    TX1000 -17dBm n 63 quality

First test - 1 room away.
    ZT3000 -38dBm n 42 quality
    TX1000 -37dBm n 43 quality

the connections are slow on the laptop being 1 room away. experience disconnects like every 5-10 minutes. any ideas?

im only one person so i cant be on a wired computer and another spot in the house testing the connection. all i could do was put the laptop in a spot and go on wired computer to check the signal n quality... and go back downstairs and try to go on a site..

people have told me on another forum to set transmit power to like 70.. some say 30 - 40 (some recommended by tomato or something??)

note. this is only a wireless problem. wired is completely fine. the router is as how it is new. the antenna is the one that comes with the router. i tried using a d-link omnidirectional antenna but it wouldnt fit b/c the connector was recessed a bit.

Your signal is actually very good with the laptops so forget about transmit power or antennas. There's something more fundamental here !

    1) Did you erase NVRAM after flashing with Tomato software? If not, do so, then key in all your config again by hand (don't use any config backup).

    2) What wireless adapters are in the client machines ? Intel? (Many of these have issues. The new Wireless N cards seem to be quite troublesome (check google).

    how do u erase nvram?

i believe the adapters vary. zt3000 is a intel. tx1000 is a broadcom. 1st gen iphone is ???... and pc uses a dlink one.. dunoe who makes the dlink adapter

    Under Administration/restore configuration/erase NVRAM.

If you did not do this, then there is a good chance this is the cause of your problems, and doing so may effect a cure. It cleans out all of the old configuration information, then you have to key in all your details again. Good luck!

aight will try it ! thanks for now. will post again here if it doesnt solve the problem :)

    which selection??

    Restore default router settings (normal)
Erase all data in NVRAM memory (thorough)

i did the normal one. all i set so far is wireless settings... like SSID, channel (3), wpa personal, tkip n the key.

doing various tests on speedtest.net as well as loading some sites...

quick info before the results.. i get about 2.94Mb/s down 0.61Mb/s up on wired. router is located on the 2nd floor on the west mid side of the house. house is a 2 story 2350 sq ft house built mainly out of wood.

1st tests - room next to room with router. northwest corner 2nd floor of the house.

the tx1000 (win7 1.6ghz x2 turion) gets between like 1.88Mb/s - 2.22Mb/s down.. 0.61Mb/s up.. 1 room away. it gets close to wired numbers when im in the same room as router.

the zt3000 (winxp 1.5ghz centrino) gets between 2.73mb/s - 2.94mb/s down .. 0.51Mb/s up.. 1 room away.. same as other laptop... close to wired speeds close to router.

these two tests consists of unplugged and plugged in for power. Lol

amd x2 4600+ 939 computer (win vista w/ d-link 54g wireless adapter. stock antenna) gets about 2.8Mb/s down 0.55Mb/s up.

2nd set of tests - downstairs in dining area. southwest corner of house

tx1000 - (unplugged) average speeds were 3.2Mb/s down 0.6Mb/s up
zt3000 - (unplugged) average speeds were 2.5Mb/s down 0.6Mb/s up

Note: weird... wireless faster then wired? also, didnt have the computer cuz.. its.. well.. a computer.. LOL

    Use thorough..

Your speeds sound fine for now, though you didn't give any details of your ISP package, but how about the disconnects?

will try it for now.. usually is fine for a bit then dies off.. will update u on how it goes...

ISP is a DSL provider. 3.0Mb/s down 512kb/s up i believe.. not too sure on the upload but down is 3.0.

will use thorough if problem still persists... thanks a bunch so far ^_^

edit. tx1000 cant connect to router. says its unable to connect. i did a thorough reset thing. tried connecting to a default setting router.. no workie.. must be a win 7 or driver issue =X

had disconnects from router every few minutes during use last nite. was one room away from bedroom. only on aim.

is there a specific way to turn the antenna that helps it? or does it not matter when its standing straight up.. its gonna go all 360 degrees?

I have been having some similar problems as of late also. Flashed from 1.23 to 1.25 and that was when things started to fall apart. Reflashed, erased NVRAM, seem to work fine for a while, then bam... Slow and intermittent access, even the main router page can take almost a minute to load! I also noted that on the "live bandwidth" graph I get pulses sometimes that hit something 105458740 Mbs, I will try to screen capture for exact values, but never noticed these before 1.25. My wife's wireless dies too as soon as I switched to 1.25 and erased the NVRAM, got it working but it also gets disconnected about every 4 Minutes. Not 100% sure it is the router, but symptoms of problems are occurring on multiple PC/Laptops and rebooting the router does seem to help for a short time. Hope to have some time this weekend to diagnose further. :(

Are you both using original Tomato? Or RAF (Victek) ? What is the router doing when the disconnects occur (torrents??).

Oh, sorry - forget about the antenna and the wireless. Your signal is so strong that it won't make any difference. That is not the problem. The speed is really of little importance until you sort out the disconnections. (BTW - are you testing with an online (local) ADSL speed tester (OKRA etc) with QOS turned off? )

Zoltair, certainly sounds like the router, I agree. I have not tried original Tomato (Zarate) 1.25, but never saw this problem with Victek's 1.25ND 8515.2 version, which is currently measuring the fastest throughput of any of the different firmwares.

A big "pulse" like that is often caused by nothing being received by the PC for a while, then it all comes in at once - and the browser processes that into a higher bandwidth reading, which is of course nonsense. Assuming that the PC is not holding things up, the router seems to be busy doing something else, causing a delay in sending to your PC. Keep your eye on the processor stats and see if they indicate anything unusual, and also the number of connections in conntrack.

I am using the Victek's 1.25 (non ND) since it is on one the older WRT54G units. Thanks for the information on the big pulse, it certainly explain it if something is lagging. Good advice. Thanks again.

the version of tomato i got is from here from this (http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato) site. Tomato_1_25.7z

no torrent. as i have said, i was just on aim.. maybe a little web browsing.

majority is default except wireless settings. added wpa2 security and password. and changed the SSID name. thats about it.

I don't see any reason for this to happen. But to eliminate the variables, what happens if you use no security encryption at all, for example?
