PS2 network setup problems

I have a PS2 that I am trying to set up so I can play online. When I go through the setup menus on the PS2 it won't connect.
I have a BEFSR41 ver. 1.0, 4 port router connected to my DSL modem.
The PS2 is connected to one of the ports. I have 3 computers that connect to the modem's other ports and everything works fine,
But the PS2 can't connect. I have tried the auto configs on the PS2 menus, I have tried to plug in the IP address of the router and other numbers in the advanced settings, all to no avail.
I thought to upgrade the router firmware, (what I have is the original from '99) but I can't do that as the linksys communication and downloads are all windows based and I have an iMac.
What can be done?. Would it help to by a new modem?
