Question about armoring your WRT54G for outdoor use...

    Hello all,

I have two WRT54G units both running Satori 4.0. I had previously been keeping up with the Sveasoft forums and followed this link for a possible solution for outdoor use:

    http://www.hyperlinktech.com/web/oem_client_kit.php

Here is my situation. I have a clear line of site between two houses. The distance is approximately 3,000 feet. If I were to buy this kit and use the radio unit in one of the WRT54G's connected to the model with the 16 dBi planar array directional flat patch antenna on one end and aim it towards the house, would the other WRT54G pick it up (using WDS?) from inside without having to buy an additional outdoor kit/antenna? Or would I have to put a different antenna on the indoor unit?

Has anyone had any experience with this? Any advice would be appreciated. Also just wanted to say thanks for putting up this site!!! It has really helped my learning curve.

    Best Regards,

    Euser4life

I would think you would need the same setup due to both wrt's having to tranmit and receive data.

If the other house has a window facing the first location with the extenal antenna, and you could situate the WRT54G by the window, then it probably would work.

It would not work if the second router were anywhere else inside, blocked by even one exterior wall, as the 'normal' 54G will not radiate a signal to the outside by more than 100-200 feet, if you're lucky.

If you still don't have quite enough signal with the second 54G at the window, you could make a simple reflector in about 15 minutes, using these templates. It would be the fastest and cheapest way to determine if you need to worry about setting up a second external antenna.

    Cheers...

Those kits at the Hyperlink site are only sold in minimum lots of 10. Anyone know where I can get similar kits one or two at a time?
