I currently have a Linksys WRT54GS V5, Which I recently found out is not very good for 3ed party firmware. Its old anyway.

So, I am willing to go out and buy a new router in order to use some hacked firmware.

Here is what I want my new router (with 3ed party firmware) to do:

I want my router to be able to boost the signal significantly farther than it normally does without any additional hardware.

Have WEP and WPA security available.

Those are really the two things I need to have anything else would be nice.

So my question what is the best combo of router and firmware out there?

WRT54GL with either Thibors HyperWRT, or Tomato or DD-WRT firmware.

I would have to say Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 with Tomato

I second both of those, they are both good routers, though i believe the wireless capability of the Buffalo is better.

Since the first requirment of "mattcompton" is a strong signal that carry farther, then the extra power of the Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 seems a better fit then a Linksys WRT54GL. Thibor doesn't run on Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 (AFAIK), and unless you need the extra features of DD-WRT, most people find Tomato perform better and more stable.
