(requesting?) new Beta Linksys-type firmware

Is there some way/method/procedure to request Linksys
(or anybody, I don't care) to add a feature or make a slight
change to official Linksys firmware, then issue a resulting
    Beta version?

Specifically, I would like to change/upgrade my BEFSR41
    (v1 or v2) to have a class-B netmask (say 255.255.0.0).

When I look at the 1.46.02 firmware I see a variable
"netMaskStr" which seems to be set to "255.255.255.%d"
(presumably to allow you to set the final octet with the
choices in the mask menu), so I would think it should be
easy for somebody who knows how to change it (say to
"255.255.0.%d" just to leave it simple).

How can I request that of Linksys? Or can anybody here?

    Thanks.

Change to an obsolete 5 year old router - I doubt it!

Credit to Linksys that they kept updating the firmware 'til a couple of years ago, but I don't expect them to do so ever again!

Well, I hope you've guessed incorrectly. Perhaps some
insider at Linksys will read this and take pity on me, for
    instance.

Or perhaps somebody who knows can tell me how to do
such a patch myself (as I suspect there may be a CRC or
checksum involved, something of that sort).

I am not asking for some officially-supported firmware
version to be created, Beta or anything else. I just am
hoping to somehow have a class-B LAN netmask. It
lets me create a class-B LAN address just fine, right now.

And as far as its being obsolete, there are lots and lots
of BEFSR41 routers on the used market. Whenever I
glance at EBay there are over a hundred listed. I have
four and like them. I am happy to keep on using them,
    since I don't have wireless hardware. It's a big world;
there's room for all of us.

Firmware delevleopment would have finished by now for this router, unless there is a major security hole.

they will NOT just drop everything to add class B subnetting. it costs money to develope more firmware something linksys wont do just for your needs.

since the firmware is not under GPL licencing you'd be better off buying a firewall router that supports this feature or using an old PC with a load of network cards and m0n0wall.

better still use a WRT54G/GS/GL with a 3rd party firmware that suports a better subnet structure.
