Since rssi is a cumulative running average of signal strength, can it be reset with a command? (besides a reboot)

I noticed that if I monitor the rssi from one router to the other, this value changes slightly. Or if I move the router if changes in value more. Obviously, this is expected. But, if I power down the extended router, the value on the monitored router stays the same. Or, is there another flag to tell if the connection exists?
