Router not showing up, or dropping connection. Also: Low bandwidth.

    Hi all,

Sorry if these questions have been asked and answered before. I've searched the forums, but found nothing that solves my problems.

    Question 1:
I am connected to a 5 Mbps ADSL line, using an old Linksys BEFW11S4 router, ver 4. Connecting wired, I get ~5 Mbps, but wired I get less than 1.5 Mbps. The router is set up to use WPA encryption. Is this normal behaviour? Should the router not be able to get a throughput of 5 Mbps?

    Question 2:
My laptop (Toshiba Satellite A100, not the same computer as the one above, but the same router) has serious problems connecting to the router. I've updated the drivers for the network card, but no difference.
The problem: The router does often not show up in the list of available networks, and when it does, it doesn't keep the connection. It will connect, and drop it within a few seconds, trying to reconnect. This goes on for a minute or so, and then my computer gives up trying. At times it won't connect at all, waiting for network address. The problem is the same whether I set a static IP or not. I can connect to other networks without problems, which I am doing at the moment.

Is this a problem that anyone else have had? Is there a easy solution? Any suggestions, apart from "buy a new computer", would be greatly appreciated!

    /Erik
