I have been reading through Teddy_Bears thread and got to page 12 then realized i'm better off to just ask my question.

I am in the market for a router that I can use USB with with the benefits of Tomato since i'm familiar with it and love it.

It looks to me like the ASUS WL-500G Pv2 and WL-500GU are what is mentioned in this thread.

I want to make sure these are still solid routers with good wireless and the USB works well as a NAS solution as well as my printer. I am leaning towards the Pv2 simply because of dual USB's but I want to make sure I can do a NAS and Printer. I'm more worried about using my External drive for this than the printer though.

If there are better solutions i'm all ears. I apologize I just didn't want to go through 150 pages of that thread today!

Newegg has both at good prices right now.

One thing re: using any of these routers as a NAS.... dont expect it to be fast. Some people have done speed tests, myself included (sorry I can't find the post link) and off the top of my head I think speeds were in the range 3-5MB/sec... which is probably fine if your your main need is to access files from outside your LAN over the internet.
But if your aim is to use it as a NAS on your LAN for moving lots of data around, I think you'll find the speeds disappointing, and you'd be better off with a dedicated NAS.

Thanks, that's good to know. Is the printer support dependent on the firmware or the router itself? I have an Epson R340 and want to know if that will work with this setup. if it does, i'll order it tonight. I'm looking for another router to play with. :)

About the printer support, you'll have to look it up and see whether the driver teddy_bear added, supports your printer. If it's a popular printer then it might work but it's worth double checking.

As for the NAS, I have a Wl-500gP v1 and indeed, the speed isn't great even with an USB stick. If you care about speed or want a more powerful NAS, you are better off with better hardware (including a dedicated NAS machine).

Unfortunately there's no official list of printers supported by the linux kernel and the p910nd printer server. Most printers work...

But unless you find posts on this forum (or other forums discussing firmware with printing support, i.e. dd-wrt or saying that you particular model does or doesn't work, the only way to know is to try yourself.

And - if price difference is not an issue - choose WL-500GPv2 over WL-520GU. More memory is always better, and the USB port speed on WL-520GU is only about half of that of WL-500GPv2 (posted by occamsrazor).

Thanks for the response Teddy. So it looks to me after looking at your thread that the Pv2 is the router to get. Just want to confirm before I order it today. For $70 i'll give it a try.

Why not, you can always sell it afterwards if it's "no dice". :)
