RT-N66U vs RT-AC66U Wireless Performance in the 2.4GHz Band

    Hello everybody,

I was comparing the 2.4GHz download profile chart on smallnetbuilder for these 2 routers and it seems to show that the N66 has much better performance under strong attenuation:

Given that both routers use the same wireless chipset for the 2.4GHz band, I was somewhat surprised to see this much difference.

Does this apply to Tomato as well? Any real life experiences with both routers under "stressful" operating conditions?

I am trying to decide between these 2 for a friend and, ideally, I would like to go for the AC66 for future proofing. However, if the performance profile above is accurate and applies under Tomato, I will probably go for the N66.

    Thank you.

Always take wireless performance comparisons with a grain of salt, especially with lower frequencies. That being said, the chip may be the same but the firmware in that comparison is different. There have been a few posts on the issue of the N66U's performance and which wireless source is used (eg. Shibby has 2 builds with different drivers from the older SDK and one with the new SDK 6). The AC66U is still pretty new and I'm sure Asus is refining drivers there as well.

    Thanks Marcel.

I kind of figured that different firmware/driver versions would affect things, that's why I was hoping someone here might have tested both routers with the same Tomato load (release, driver, etc.)
