RT41-BU ROUTER: Application bandwidth

In the Linksys RT41-BU Broadband router you can set certain ports to be open to a device, but on the Access Restrictions tab I set a certain device to use all of its ports to be open (FTP,IMAP,TELNET,POP3,NNTP,HTTPS,SNMP,DNS,ETC.)

Now I've been told that certain applications such as FTP or whatever can use up more of my bandwidth and I should limit their access to receive optimal performance.

I've been wondering that if (the only way to disable them) I block one of the services, would it save my bandwidth? And which service uses up more bandwidth?
