I want to create a small wireless network in my neighborhood, it is rural,
and hilly, forested. Houses are at the top of hills, some as much as
1/2 a mile. Do you have suggestions for hardware to network these
sites together, in a little hotspot

Buy yourself a 12dB omni antenna, a WRT54GS, and you have the hotspot ready. Make sure it is on a place where every connecting client can see it - line of sight is very important.
The clients will need antennas as well, but they can go cheap - either pick some from eBay or make them themselfs. Just make sure it is at least 10dB.
