RV042 reboots when users VPN through it?

I'm wondering if anyone could shed some light on this.. No matter what computer I use, or if I use Cisco VPN software or MS VPN software to connect to my office I get the following problem. The rv042 isn't setup for any kind of vpn'ing, I've just enabled all the pass-throughs which allow pptp, etc traffic out. When I choose disconnect on my client computer, many times the rv042 reboots for no apparent reason. This is especially worse when I vpn into two places at the same time.. I'm trying the newest 1.3.8 firmware and it's the same story.. I have it setup as load-balancing, but forcing all major traffic to wan1, since wan2 is slow and does my SMTP out traffic only. Any ideas?

I've VPN'd both to and through the RV042...using PPTP and IPSec VPN clients and never seen this issue. I've also simultaneously had multiple site-to-site VPN tunnels active and the device has never rebooted. It doesn't sound like a firmware issue to me, though I should rule out the obvious by asking if you've reset the device to factory defaults before *and* after upgrading the firmware?

Failing this, (literally!) it would appear you have a hardware issue and you should consider RMA'ng the box to Linksys.

I didn't do a reset.. Can I save my settings and reset it and then restore my settings, or shall I resetup the entire box from scratch again..

You should be able to restore your old settings from your backup configuration file after doing the factory reset.

I did a hard reset and restore of my old settings.. Same problem.. I did a hard reset again and setup everything from scratch.. Problem gone.. Weird.. I guess something must have been corrupt or the settings were bad in the previous firmware and they carried over to the new.. The only reason I bought this thing was so I could use two wan ports.. My floppy based linux one was much better.. I was getting worried that it seemed the more money I spent on a router the crappier it was..

    It's always something isn't it? :)

While saying that I don't have that particular problem on my own MS PPTP sessions through the RV042, I do know that there are a number of issues that constitute "doesn't work". Could you be more specific? Does the PPTP session stop at any particular step?

    1. Connecting
    2. Verifying Username and Password
    3. Registering Your Computer

What error message are you getting?

I had the same issue with an RV042. I went out and bought a replacement and it works fine. Haven't tried to hard reset the one with the issue -- didn't really think that would solve anything...

Ok, I checked with the user again.. he says it connects fine, and works for about 5 min, then disconnects.. Dosen't matter what computer he uses.. It disconnects without warning.. Different vpn sites and diff servers..

It *does* sound like a pass-through issue for MS PPTP. Make sure that the pass-through radio button for PPTP is checked. Even if it is, uncheck it, save the configuration then check it, and save the configuration. Toggling the setup like this might re-initialize the pass-through feature. Beyond that I can't offer any other clever suggestions, particularly in light of the fact that you are having this issue with several PPTP server/client combinations.
