I moved this into it's own thread so that perhaps it will get a little more visibility...

I have an attached USB Hard drive (1 TB WD MyBook) currently formatted ext3 attacked to my RT-N16 with Tomato ND USB Mod with kernel 2.6 Beta 16. I have noticed that when attempting to access the drive and transfer from it via Samba speeds are painfully slow (See Image below), I have tried both windows 7 pro as well as Ubuntu 10.4 using Samba with similar speeds. On a lark I turned on FTP access today and noticed that speeds were significantly better via FTP. I was wondering if anyone else had seen this issue or have a resolution to it.

I wasn't getting such poor performance but after reading what you posted, I gave FTP a try (mounted as network drive in Windows). Went from ~4 MB/s to ~6 MB/s. Nice 50% increase.

    I also have Asus RT-N16 with Tomato Firmware v1.28.9049 MIPSR2-beta19 K26 USB vpn3.6.

    Edit (should've mentioned):
Both my external drives are formatted NTFS.
    4 MB/s was with SMB.
    6 MB/s was with FTP.
