signal strength loss during heavy data transfers?

I noticed something curious about the signal strength level seen on my Powermac's Airport Extreme card (as reported by the AP Grapher software) when connected to my Linksys WRT54-G wireless router. When the connection is idle or under light to moderate usage I see the reported signal strength maintain a relatively stable level (about 80%). However if I do the RoadRunner broadband speed test (that transfers data at about 4.78 Mbps) I notice a significant drop in the signal strength (to perhaps 60-65%) during the data transfer. Afterwards the signal strength immediately returns to the normal level. Is this a typical behavior of all G wireless routers or something specific to the Linksys models? Also what exactly is the cause of this droop in signal strength?
