Slow FTP Connects with WRT54G

I experience very slow connections to external FTP servers when using my V3 WRT54G. (I've tried a couple different Linksys Firmwares... haven't tried a mod'd firmware yet.) The problem seems to appear most when I'm connecting to a server for the first time during a session. Example:

Using any FTP client behind my router, I connect out to a public FTP site. The connection just "hangs" for about 5-10 seconds, then goes ahead and authenticates/connects. After I'm connected, the transfers are speedy.

I also have a Netgear wireless router and DO NOT experience that using the same client connecting to the same server. It connects as it should in a matter of one or two seconds.

Both MTUs are set the same (1500). I tried 1492 on the Linksys, but it had no affect.

It's really annoying when editing HTML live on servers... since the editor has to connect each time I save or open another document.

    Any ideas?
