Slower Internet speed over wireless versus ethernet

If I connect my laptop computer directly to my WRT54GS v2 router with an ethernet cable, my speedtest using http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ is about 5mb (I have Qwest DSL 7mb service). But when I connect to the router wirelessly, my speed drops down to 2mb. I have been through several calls with Linksys tech support and have installed latest firmware v4.70.6, reset the router, tweak several settings (beacon interval, fragmatation threshold, rts threshold) to no avail.

Does anybody have any ideas why my speed drops connected wirelessly? It affects all computers on the network and the wireless signal is very strong, so it is not the wireless speed that is affecting it. I can have the laptop sitting right next to the router and still get the same results.

have you tried any composite or new drivers for your laptop wireless device? perhaps this is the problem?

As far as i know i'm running the latest.. I benchmark on wirelessly over the network at like 2500kb/s+ but it can't even pull 300kb/s down which i find very strange..
