Hello, I am new to wireless and I have a few wireless router questions.

    I have a brand new laptop (http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/pr...665000FS10084218&catid=22495&logon=&langid=EN)
arriving tomorrow, I also bought a new wireless router. It's a Linksys WRT54G. The serial # starts with CDFD and it says Model No.WRT54G ver.6 on the bottom.

What I want to know is, is there anything I can or should do to improve the performance and range with a firmware update or something? I see mention of firmware and stuff like tomato but I don't know what it is or what it means.

Also, any tips or hints on setting it up would be much appreciated, I am new to wireless, please be gentle...Thanks for any help, John.:)

    Welcome to the forums.

Looks like a very nice laptop you have on order which should run about the same or similar to my Acer laptop with the same AMD Turion 64 x2 processor.

There is not much you can do with a version 6 router they have limited amount of memory inside of them. For improving the range you can try the range extending antennas from Linksys.

Because of the reduced amount of memory in the WRT54G versions 5, 6, and 7 they will not accept 3rd party firmware such as Tomato, Thibor, and others.

    Thanks for the quick reply.

How does the new Turion X2 chip work in your laptop? It seemed to be the best bang for my buck which is why I have always preferred AMD over Intel.

Anyway, I was gonna get the same laptop but with the X-52 chip and a 17" screen, it was $200.00 more. I think the bigger screen woulda killed the battery faster and wasn't worth the extra money, that or my fiancé didn't want me to spend $200 more....:halo:

So, you're saying just use the router as is and get any updates from Linksys?
That sounds pretty easy, Thank you.

    John :drinking: :)

you right with the memory part its small compare to ver 1 router. but my ver 6 works like a charm with micro bin of dd wrt. in dd wrt you can change the nW to improve the radio range. also changeing antenas or putting reflectors on the anntena will help. but if the laptop and router is on the same floor 28 nW (stock setting) should be all right.
