Speed up my wireless? How?

I've only just yesterday really done any of this stuff. So, I'm sure my questions will be easy for any of you to answer. So, I thank you in advance!

Looking through the internet at 100s of reviews for Linksys' add-on antennae for the WRT54G models, I saw a lot of positive and negative comments...and then I saw a lot of "You don't need that, just upgrade your firmware!"

So, I did...successfully, I guess. I have all these new settings to play with now...bad thing is, I didn't know much of squat about the OLD settings.

My goal was obviously to improve my wireless speed/connection.

I have my router upstairs in a corner room and I have a laptop and another computer 1 floor down running wireless. The stationary computer usually states it's getting a fair or good connection.

So, which of these new fancy settings will yield the best results without frying my router or my brain?

And, in the end, should I also invest in the new antennae?

    Thanks guys!
