I have a Linksys WRT54GL running 4.30.9. I make an ssh connection to a remote machine. If that connection is idle for an hour the connection drops.

My Netgear 624 does not drop an idle connection. Why?

I can make the connection stay if the ssh client sends a protocol no-op every 60 seconds.

Why the difference between the routers? Is there a router option that keeps that idle connection. I've read about TCP timeout - that's not it, and NAT table timeouts.

I think that if qos in tomato is enabled and ssh is not classified as a priority the connection will be used for something else...
this is normal Tomato behavior you can look at the conntrack page.
