Strange problems with the WRT54GS in WDS or client mode

I have a WRT54GS that I am trying to get to work from house-to-house in WDS mode. Everything works fine for a while, but then at random times the wireless connection seems to lock up. The router seems to lose signal (drops DHCP etc.) though it still shows up as having a signal in the Status>>Wireless screen. One thing I have noticed is that the rssi stays constant while it is locked up, though the noise fluctuates from -50 to -100. This lasts for a minute to ten minutes or until I reboot the router or upload the config file again.

All I am doing is surfing the web and some ftp and http downloading, so it is not the P2P problem that seems to exist. I have tried pre4 and pre5, both have this problem. Things I plan on trying when I get the time:
.adjust the signal strength -- currently at 251mW, maybe it's overheating?
    .try a WRT54G I have -- maybe there's a bug in the 54GS?
.use Alchemy 1.0 -- maybe some kind of bug in the pre DD-WRT?
.retry client mode -- I didn't try too many things with this.

I'd appreciate any suggestions or ideas anyone has. Thanks in advance.

I seem to have the same problem using WDS as described above.

did u try different channels? That fluctuating may be caused by someones 2.4ghz phone nearby.

Did you try to enable the AP watchdog and/or the WDS watchdog? First should AFAIK check the wireless process, second reboots the router when its wds peer cannot be reached in the given time.
Also try to adjust the transmission power.

Yeah, I tried that, but it reboots about every five minutes to two hours. I'd prefer to solve the problem rather than to find a workaround. Thanks for the help though.

Hmmm, I had this lock up only one time with my DD-WRT pre4. RSSI hang and my WDS bridge did not work any more, but my netstumbler stilled showed a signal from my 2nd AP which hang.

I just fixed transmission power and disabled AP isolation on both APs. Now it runs for days without any problems.
Ok, 30 mins ago, my gateway AP rebooted when I adapted QoS for VoIP. But this time, I'm sure, it was not the wireless' fault. Don't know why it does a reboot. Should not be necessary for new QoS rules.
