Talisman cron problem, whats the deal?

As a result of my recent readings about wolf leaving and general complaints about james at sveasoft I decided not to renew my subscription and will soon be moving to a new firmware solution but for right this second I have a network with 1 gateway router and 2 WDS routers. I am having disconnect issues with my WDS links mostly at night for some reason and I was working on a shell script to monitor pings to WDS units at a set interval via cron. If the pings are successfull then do nothing but if the pings fail then reboot the router. This script is intended to sit on the gateway router only as restarting this router always brings the WDS links back without touching the repeaters themselves.
I am however, having problems getting cron to do anything and all of the cron docs that I can find are for Alchemy which differs from Talisman in the way cron is handled I think.
Can anyone give me some help in how to get the cron service to work in Talisman?

Thanks to all for your assistance,
