Thibor 16 for the WRT54G/GS/GL

This is to let you know some things about Thibor 16 for the WRT54G/GS/GL.
I WILL be doing it, but ONLY after i have finished with the WRTSL version. This will take as long as it takes, but when i'm happy with it, i will start on G version.

the changes for the GS, etc versions are not major and are summarized thus:
    1. DDNS fixes
    2. UPnP fixes.
    3. DNSMasq, IPTables, Busybox upgrades
    4. Possibly PoPToP, we'll have to see how the space is.

see that's basically it, and if there is a newer codebase, i will integrate that into it too.
Now as i've stated above, i will do it when the SL version is finished, please don't bug me about it, it just naffs me off, and reduces my inclination to do it in the first place; i don't use the G/GS/GL as a gateway since getting the SL so 15c serves my needs quite adequately.
Remember chaps, this is only done by me, in my spare time; and like you lot; i have a full time job, house, wife, and kids to deal with too.

Heh, I just made a post in a thread that another user created summing up mostly what you just said here... I posted in it before I saw this post :p

Regardless, I'm just letting you know that I'd be more than happy to help test the G firmware once you get started on it, and if you need testers.

    Cheers.

The other night I put Thibor 15c on my WRT54GL ver. 1.1 and I am happy with it.

When Thibor 16 comes out for the G/GS/GL then I will be happy to test it and provide feedback to you.

I would like to thank you for producing Thibor 15.

Thanks Thibor - the only 'feature' I have wanted to change was the DDNS 30 day expiry but the workaround via startup commands and cron job has been working fine.

Please take it as a massive complement that 15c has been so stable for so long - I confidently recommend it to anyone for their first forays into using 3rd party firmware which does all those useful things Linksys left out - some no doubt deliberately to protect their sales of higher spec devices!

In fact the high standards/stability of 15c means that 16 must not be rushed out before it is ready and tarnish the good brand name of 'Thibor' - no pressure then - take as long as you need!

Did I see somewhere that the Lego mindstorms NXT robot is opensource? Perhaps if we all headed over to the donate button on Thibor's website http://www.thibor.co.uk/ we could get all of Thibor's family interested in 3rd party firmware?

    Just going by GPL dates

    The version used by Thibor

4.71.1 was posted 25 April 2006 for the GS at about the same time

4.30.5 was posted 2 May 2006 for the GL

There's just been a new one

4.30.9 posted 18th Jan 2007 only 183MB of compressed files!

Without asking Thibor to do this-

can anyone else tell what has been changed in the stock firmware? Maybe just support for latest version GL's?

You probably do know why I have been there recently! Its my default in my FTP client which sorts latest to the top - so I can also tell you that new things just posted in WRT54GX - an old 1.00.06?

and in a folder that I thought was no longer current

    WRT54G a version 4.21.1

Donation made from here as well. I use 14 at both home and office and it works flawlessly. In fact, because of the power increase options for wireless, we were able to save having to buy an additional antenna at the office for better strength. (We have just the WRT54G)

Thanks for all you do. I'm going to upgrade to 15 tonight.

Just want to be one of those who said that your work is great. My WRT54G v 4.0 works fine with your Thibor 15c, and I'm very happy with it.
Wireless on/off with SES button is an very useful option for me and Web Interface is just "what is needed" (not to much, not to less)
I will be patient and very happy when Thibor 16 will come.
    Follow your great works

    Edit:
Just forgot to mention that probably VPN access (that is in the list, I have read it) will be a great addon, for my own part

    Hey Thibor,

Don't take this the wrong way, but what are the issues with getting Thibor 17 to work on the G/GL/GS routers? I'd like to try to get it working, but I'm unsure why it wouldn't.

Wow, there's a Thibor17 now? I haven't been following Thibor's firmware much since I switched to Tomato, but I thought he was still developing Thibor16 for use on the G/GS/GL. What's Thibor17? Is the SL firmware already 2 full releases ahead of the G firmware?

What fix is this? Does it have to do with the new TCP stack in Vista? I just found this link regarding it: http://robgarrett.com/cs/blogs/software/archive/2006/12/31/vista-firefox-2-slow-network.aspx
Is this what Linksys will be patching? Also, what would be the ETA on the fix? I'm assuming that there isn't one, from the 'for some time now' part of your sentence... ;)

What did you compile it on? I've never compiled HyperWRT myself, just OpenWRT (which had everything already setup). Looks like I might need to install Ubuntu again....

Also, http://www.linksysinfo.org/forums/showthread.php?t=52787, this thread has the GPL code for the Vista fixes on the RV routers. I haven't looked at it myself, but is it possible to merge the TCP section of the code with the G/GL/GS branch, or is it coded into the driver rather than the kernel?

The fix is for samba, as the SL has a USB port to use to plug an external HDD.
Vista does not allow easy setup of that volume...

  31. GhaladReam

Isn't Thibor17 ONLY for the SL? Does it work on the G/GS/GL regardless?

Thibor17 RC3 is only for the SL it has USB support and is a much larger size (7Mb+) then the 3mb+ size for the WRT54G/GL

I know Thibor is busy with many other things. My only request is if there ever is a Thibor 16 for the G/GS/GL router, that the QoS section go back to the format it used in Thibor 14. I know Tofu13c/Thibor14 had the stock QoS look with some additions that worked fantastic. I used Thibor 15c for quite a while and it's extremely stable. I just had a small problem in the QoS where web browsing would slow down noticably while either downloading torrents or using VoIP. In the Tofu13c/Thibor 14 and Tomato builds I've tried, the QoS seemed to work better in that regard. Web browsing didn't suffer quite as much when using Bittorrent or VoIP. If the QoS is more configurable, it seems to be more effective.

tstrike, if you don't like the L7 filters and want it the way it used to be, just define your own app priorities, they are identical to the way it was in 14. don't use the predefined apps or games and just use your own. this way it is exactly the same as in prior versions.

In reference to the "Role" in Thibor 14, if I'm remembering right, it sounds like setting up an Application port in 15c would be like setting up the Role in 14 to client and an online game in 15c would be a Server role in 14.

    Hey Thibor,

When do you plan to support IPV6 in your releases?

It is going to be a issue more and more. I suspect that IPV4 discontinue in the next 2 years. In the mean time IPV6 will be used much more.

It is a good thing to prepare us for IPV6 before the world is moving to it and we are running behind the facts.

I hope that your good efforts will continue. 15c release is working like a charm.

    Hi thibor,

Since hyperwrt is down, i can't have new information about your firmware.
And, because i was a moderator of hyperwrt forum, i receive many mail witch ask me some things...

First, you say that you will release an hyperwrt 16 for WRT54G and wrt54gs when you finish hyperwrt 16 for wrtsl54gs.
But as they can see on http://www.thibor.co.uk , there is a version 17 for wrtsl54gs...
So can we have an idea of what work left before you can see for WRT54G and gs ?

No hurry then neither anything like this, but just to be able to ensure there will be a new release. And to be able to calm down those who say that hyperwrt is down and deprecated by mail.

    Thanks in advance

PS : if you don't understand something in this post, maybe it's because i'm french and i'm not as good as i want to speak english ;)

thibor firmware is for your Wireless router, not a USB wireless device.

The signal strength can be increased on the WRT54G series but not a USB or Wireless plugin device. speed is linked to signal strength but 54g does have a limitation no matter what the strength is.

I am really hoping there will still be a version 16, but only if there will be follow up fixes for anything new that pops up after the initial release.

I am currently running Tomato on my WRT54G v1 and DD-WRT on my WRT150N and have been happy with that, however, for my office, I really prefer Thibor as it is simpler for other co-workers to use the interface when necessary. We only use the wireless to test VPN connectivity prior to releasing new laptops to end users and so far, 15c has worked well, however I am forced to reboot the router more than I would like :(

I have a feeling Thibor has his hands full with his profession that he's already abandoned this avocation...

I was really looking forward to his new builds but I think it's time to move on... Too bad I really like his last version, but it obviously needs more tweaking...

I'm now trying Tomato on my v1.1 WRT54GL

I was forced to move on from 15c to Tomato about 8 months ago. I was having horable times with UPnP and needing to reboot once a week. Tomato fixed all of that and has been solid.

People... I'm pretty sure Thibor has abandoned this project. Besides, I can't really think of anything he could improve upon that Tomato hasn't already covered. He probably thinks the same thing, therefore not bothering to update his firmware. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if he himself has put Tomato on his WRT54G/GS/GL's :)

True, but this thread is for discussion of the G/GS/GL... There's a seperate thread for the SL. Tomato is better than Thibor 15c for the G/GS/GL.

I have "old" Thibor 12 with my wrt54gs v2 and when I tried tomato thats was a real fiasco, wifi was unstable with hight and down and PS3 very very very slow (DMZ). Tomato look better but hyperwrt is more efficient in my opinion.

But I think it's a serious PS3 buffering problem, there is only a poor 256MB memory inside the playstation 3 box... (grandfathers 1990's computer windows 3.1 have more ...!!!)

Between my wirelesses laptop and my computer I upload a complete 700MB movie in 2 minutes in streaming...In fact, that's mean exactly 2600KB/s thats PS3 can NEVER handle with 256MB memory only...

Unfortunately PS3 don't use his hard drive for buffering too... and his web browser with 2.52 PS3 firmware update freeze like an ass too.

    THIS IS A PROBLEM.

Sony programmers have to do with the splendid cell processor for optimizing transferts between components inside the box BEFORE to grow a gigantic firmware for nothing. Must stop red wine dudes...

Sorry to inform you but the WRT54G ver. 5.1 will not work with 3rd party firmwares because they no longer use Linux and they have reduced the amount of memory in them.

    Latest HyperWRT firmware for WRT54GS

    Hello everyone,
    I am a newbie to the site. I have got a Linksys WRT54GS Ver.6 Serial#CGN91F****
Can this unit be converted to an ethernet Bridge ??

The reason I asked is because I installed DD-WRT on the unit, but cannot get it to
communicate with my wireless router a Netopia model 3347-02.

I think that I am not carrying-out all the required changes on the WRT in order for it to communicate with the router.
Is there an instruction/guide that I can access and follow step by step to verify if all the changes have been made to the WRT54GS.??

    Would appreciate some help.
