just thought i'd give you all a quick update of where we are with Thibor16 for the WRTSL54GS. Myself and grcore have been working tirelessly to get this as good as can be. a quick run down is:
    Newest Codebase(2.06.0) based
    Newest Iptables
    Newest Dnsmasq
    ProFTPD 1.3.0a(also newest)
    Newest Busybox
    Newest IPP2P
    Newest p910nd
    Added the PoPToP VPN server
Modified the print server, so that it autostarts if a printer is detected, and stops if that printer is removed, or turned off.
Added extra options to FTP page.
    Cleaned up the pages.

there are many, many more changes and fixes; but i just don't remember them off the top of my head.
it should be done very soon, perhaps with some extras not listed here :)

great news, thanks for all the hard work. I can't wait to give it a spin. When it is ready that is. Everyone that installs 16 on their SL should drop a PayPal in the e-mail. I know I will. You do accept PayPal right?

will this compatible with WRT54G V2.0 too?

Thibor, your 15c is *so* reliable that I don't need to bounce my router any more and it frequently stays online without a reset for more than 30 days. I have my router configured to update my dynamic IP address with one of the services but they will drop my IP registration without seeing any updates within 30 days, would it be possible to do a dynamic IP address update once a week? Also, during that month I'm fairly certain my DSL provider is changing my IP address, does an IP address change force a dynamic IP address change, too?

  10. Thibor

Thibor Super Moderator Staff Member Member

if the ip changes, ddns is automatically updated and that works. the only issue is when the router is online for 30 days without an ip change. i may have fixed that too, but it needs to be tested and i don't use ddns. you can't force a weekly update, your ddns provider will see it as abusive behaviour and bin you for it.
JetLi: of course it isn't compatible with the Gv2.0, this is for the wrtSL54gs

i'm also willing to release to a couple of testers, on the proviso that it doesn't get released to anybody else. i have to have control of this, and all open issues must be resolved before it's released as i don't plan to do Thibor17 for the SL. this will be my final version on this platform.
the first 3 responses here with their email addresses will get the firmware. i'll remove the addresses from here after sending.

Why do you have to reset your router? I must be doing something wrong. Mine stays up for months at a time. The only time I reset it is when I have provider trouble.

That's sad. I know we all have a limited amount of a resource called "time", but any specific reason to drop support for the SL ? (Sheer curiosity, no need to answer).

there's no need for it. like i've said before, there's no point just adding features for the sake of it, i don't want to go down that road. i also won't be doing anything further with the G/GS/GL after T16 either, i just think that they are easily stable enough now. i will be doing something with the WRV200 and possibly the WRT350N

Just got the wrtsl54gs (well I ordered it, has not gotten here yet.) I am using your firmware on an older WRT54G and love it. Want to go to the wrt350n later, so I will be looking to see if you do anything with it. Then I can save my pennies and upgrade everything. I got the SL because I wanted the Storage Link. And the improvements you made in that area of the firmware.

Hope you do the same with the 350n

I bought the wrt350n and hmm well it ain't going so well. The wireless connection is one of the most frustrating setups I have ever encountered. At first my wireless card refused to even acknowledge the routers presence. (There is nothing wrong with the card-- I had just used it 10 minutes before to connect to my wrtsl54gs np) It turns out I had to reload the firmware since it didn't seem to stick in memory very well from the factory. The router from the factory had the newest firmware. And now I can connect but the connection goes down to around a 1 mbps from 54 mbps after 5 minutes of connectivity. No matter what I change I can't stop it from happening. Does anyone know what hardware is in this router? I think it is a 266mhz cpu? With 32megs of ram? I think the hardware is probably the better stuff out there, just the firmware is crap. I hope this router gets some 3rd party firmware support fairly soon cause linksys can't seem to do it. Right now the 350n is a gigabit switch behind my wrtsl54gs router cause the gigabit switch is the only advantage I can see for now.

So it's reasonable to assume that you will in fact be releasing Thibor16 for the G/GS/GL, just not anything after it?

  28. Toxic

problem is the WRTSL54GS is far better than any so called PreN product. the wireless side of PreN is unstable and by the looks of everyday performance 54G is better. stay with what is stable and works:)

    gwheaton Network Guru Member

Oh yea, I don't plan on upgrading anytime soon. I don't even have the SL yet. (Tomorrow, it is on a FedEx truck, I can SEE IT.)

But nice to know that Thibor is thinking about the 350n

One Question on 15 versus 16, I will be getting my SL tomorrow, should I put on Thibor 15 or just wait for 16 to come out. Is it worth the trouble.

And thanks to everyone on the forum for all the good advice and info.

15c's rock stable. Things are better from the linksys firmware right off the bat.
I just got my SL a couple days ago, stuck 15C on it, just like the WRT54G 1.0 it replaced. Plus, getting used to the new options available early is definitely a plus :)

  32. gwheaton

    gwheaton Network Guru Member

Yea I know, I have it on a WRT54G and love it. Just was not sure if it 16 was coming out soon if it was worth putting 15c on or waiting as I really don't what to have to go thru and reset up all the settings.

    Thibor,

I am going to hook up a USB Hard Drive, What type of partation is the best to use. If I use NTFS, is there any file size limits? Does NTFS Support RW? I know there were limitations before, just wondering were things stood with your firmware.

    Thanks

full ntfs, fat32 and ext3 r/w support. 4gb file size limit with fat32, don't think any other sizes are restricted in the other fs's

Still waiting for confirmation on whether or not 16 is coming out for the G/GS/GL line. From what I gather, it is. I'm assuming it will be after the SL release, but I would love a solid yes or no answer.

yes, of course it will. features will be the same too, except for the storage related stuff.

Ok, Just tried a drive with a NTFS part. I could read what was there, but not write data to the drive, so I deleted the NTFS and put on an ext3 partation and all is working.

  39. Thibor

Thibor Super Moderator Staff Member Member

if you couldn't write to it, there was something up. i have no problems this end writing and reading to/from NTFS.

  40. gwheaton

any ideas what I should check? only thing different is the Partation type. With NTFS, I could read, no write, with Ext2 Read and Write.

Above I said I went Ext3, really should have said Ext2.

Gordon: did you give rw permissions to the guest account? i can read and write folders and/or files to both a 400gb FAT32 drive and a 320gb NTFS drive.

    Top_Gun Network Guru Member

Whoops, deleted. Bogus question, I solved it myself.

For those who do not see correct menues with FF 2.0 and Thibor 15c: You are possibly using the "noscripts"-plugin. Allow scripts for the routeraddress, and everything will be just fine ;)

    Regards,

    Top Gun

  43. gwheaton

    gwheaton Network Guru Member

Yep, I tried with NTFS and no Writing. I left all the router settings the same, just reformatted the drive for ext2 and set up the share partition but left all the permission info the same and I could read and write the ext2 formated drive.

Since it is working for you, I will do some more testing tomorrow. and see what I can do.

UPDATE: Thibor, I had a thought (I know that could be trouble), but as for your NTFS, are you using that on the your 16 version? I saw on the Linksys site that the newer firmware has some NTFS updates, and was wondering if that my be why it is working for you and not for me since I am using your 15c firmware based on the older linksys firmware or if NTFS worked for you on 15c.

    Thanks

16 will be done soon, and released when it's done. i've been working on getting samba-3.0.23d into HyperWRT but it's just too large for it to go in. so we'll finish cleaning the webpages and sorting the daft alignment errors and more than likely release it tomorrow.
Linksys are aware that 3.0.23d is necessary for Vista, so there will be an update in the not too distant future.

  48. arigosh

    arigosh Network Guru Member

Does that means there will be a Thibor 17 when Linksys releases a version that includes Samba-3.0.23d to support Vista?

    don't push it :)
there'll be a further release, but as i've said before, 16 will be my final. whether it's 16a,b or z

  50. arigosh

    arigosh Network Guru Member

I'm actually quite skeptical about Linksys releasing any more software for this product. I am getting the feeling that they mostly abandoned it. I was getting the feeling they only released this last one as an afterthought when people started asking them why are they not releasing the source code for the beta firmware they had out for such a long time.

  51. Toxic

    Toxic Administrator Staff Member

tbh linksys have slipped away from the SL since the WRT350N was on the cards. they drop the release of the SL in Europe, and tbh i think they could have made a mistake.

The SL by all means is a workhorse and far superior than the plain WRT54G/GS/GL

the firmware release of 2.00.6 was finalised by linksysinfo asking a few linksys staff to get it out. it worked and now within the next few days, or maybe hours we shall have Thibor16 which maybe the final release, but well worth it.

if the WRTSL54GS was available in the UK i know i'd be owning more than just one!

damn straight, i'd have a s**t load of them too. :)

  53. arigosh

    arigosh Network Guru Member

So I'm not the only one thinking there wont be Vista support for the SL, what a shame. I bought mine just a few months ago, and I feel kind of cheated when I see Linksys abandoning a product they are still selling, this is not a mark of a good consumer centered company.

  54. Thibor

Thibor Super Moderator Staff Member Member

well even if that does happen, there's still some hope to be had. the WRT350N is a current flagship product and WILL require vista interoperability, so in the worse case, i can get samba from there instead. fear not :)

One question though, are you going to be using the SL 2.06 code-base or the 4.71.1 codebase the GS v1-v4 use? I assume it would be pointless to use the SL codebase, but I'm just curious.

the 2.06 is purely for the SL.

Have a question, what is the difference between Port Redirection and Port Range Forwarding other than one is a range and one applies to a specific port.
I have a camera that is assigned to a specific port and I have been using Port Range Forwarding but now I am not sure what to use or should I use both?

Redirection is used if you want to specify a different port on the wan side (ie route port 1234 to port 9999 internally).

Otherwise forwarding works fine if you want to use the same port inside and out.

    Got a Question for Thibor...

I've been running 15c on a 54GS v1.0 since last May and it has been super reliable. I just added Vonage VoIP service and have had less than satisfactory results with QoS. I wont bother you with details, but I just wanted to know if v16 has made any changes or improvements to that area?
Thanks in adavance and have a great holiday.

there is not point is raising an issue if you have one with QoS and Vonage if you dont explain what you have done to try and rectify the problem. This thread is for the WRSL54GS and as the changelog reflects, it says nothing on QoS for vonage.

please open a new thread with your particular problem, including your network layout.

I was just asking if QoS had been changed in any significant way. I'll just wait for 16 for the WRT54GS and see. Then if there are still problems I'll open a new thread.

QoS has NOT been changed in T16, and won't be for the GS version. QoS works well in my tests, though YMMV due to the way you run it.

  82. hamlet

It works for me too, but not as well as expected. I recently added VoIP and assigned highest priority to the VoIP modem and lowest to my PC NIC which handles everything else. I set the upstream bandwidth manually to what I measure, and although I can certainly tell whether it's on or off when making a call, the call quality is choppy when I'm deliberately uploading to use all the bandwidth while making a phone call. It's working, but not 100% and others on the line can hear the quality difference. I've tried lowering the max BW to be sure to be underwhat the ISP can provide but that doesn't help.
It's obviously working since without it I cannot be understood at all while uploading a file, but it isn't as good as I expected. Maybe my expectations are unrealistic.

    hamlet:

Try lowering it to about 90% of tested bandwidth, then keep lowering it in 5kbps increments until you see an improvement. If you never see an improvement, then you have a setup issue in QoS.

My upload/upstream/outgoing speed is "rated" by the ISP at 256k up. I tested it at about 215-220. I have my upstream rate set to about 190, and that works well for me. If I take it to 195, I start getting reports of "light chop" or "tinny audio" on the other end of the conversation.

Tested versus real is never a constant. You may want to try a test at www.testyourvoip.com and look for discarded packets or other line issues, as well.

  84. Thibor

Thibor Super Moderator Staff Member Member

    that's a good figure, i use 190 for a isp rated 256k too.

Thibor, I think I ran into a small bug, I have been trying to get the FTP server working on T16 and one of the things I did was to put the guest account into the list of those able to access the FTP server from outside. I then went to the Storage/Administration page and under User Management opened the guest account and checked to see if there was a password. When I clicked on modify the guest name changed to "(null)" and cannot be changed back to guest.

Did I do something wrong? If so how can I correct it?

    Thanks and Merry Christmas.

  86. hamlet

My rated upload speed is 384kbps and I routinely measure 350. I'll try setting my max upload to 300 and see if that improves it. I was using 350. I hate to give up the BW but to keep peace with others in my home I may have to ;-)
    Thanks for the advice.

Bill, i just tried to edit the guest account, and as i expected, all fields were greyed out, meaning i couldn't edit it. perhaps something screwy is going on at your end. i'd try doing what i said in the other identical post you made, or if that doesn't help then try a factory reset.
**EDIT** bug confirmed. in future, don't press the modify button for the guest account. i'll fix it shortly and get a new release out with any other bugs that are noticed.

This affects the var nas_login, so if you did this you can set it back to default through the cli and redo the user administration without having to reset to defaults (although I reccomend resetting defautls).

Bill, just do a reset to defaults, then don't press the modify button in the guest properties page.

I had that same bug earlier and I reflashed it and fixed it. Just wandering if anyone can use remote admin and ssh? The gui won't allow me to enable remote management. SSH will check off in the gui but won't work either. I reflashed and did hard reset before and after and both times give me this bug.

seems there maybe a bug in the rm side of the webgui, mine is enabled but the webgui is reporting it is disabled.

Great job guys, take the holiday off...after that take a look at the media server. I selected a folder /public/music that contains other folders with mp3's in them. I can see the WRTSL54GS on my Linksy WMLS11B but cannot see any of the mp3's. I thought that maybe the server could not see what is in the sub folders so I moved several mp3's into the music folder, still nothing.
When I run a scan from the GS's media server gui it only takes several seconds to complete the scan, which seems odd, since I have over 1400 mp3's in the folder(s).
    Any suggestions.

    Thanks, and Happy New Year.

due to your comments, i just turned on the media server for the first time after setting up the partition for it to use. copied some mp3 files to a usb stick, and scanned it. it took a second or two to do it. then i went to my xbmc and had a look for UPnP media servers, it found my SL, and in music were listed all the songs i'd added to the stick. Bottom Line is: it's working perfectly well here, i don't know what more to add.

Dammmm, must be the Linksys WMLS11B, it sees the media server but does not display any files. Need to figure out how to test using another device.

Sorry to interrupt your holiday, really not necessary for you to go to that trouble but I do appreciate it very much.

    Happy New Year..

Try testing with just a few files with short filenames and no weird characters.

It;s working for me streaming to a Nokia 770.
