    December 2 2011 - Toastman-RT-1.28.7491 and variants

    • Dnsmasq 2.59 update
    • VLAN-GUI: include WHR-G54S port mapping (Teaman)
    • Fix column sorting on ipt-daily.asp, ipt-monthly.asp and ipt-details.asp (Teaman)
    • Added "Route Modem IP" option (from Tomato/MLPPP) (Teaman)
    • Revert "l2tp: backport Asus' l2tp driver"
    • L2TP defaults to sync framing
The latter two commits fixes connection problems experienced by many L2TP users esp. in Russia, while it should not affect other users. It has never been clear to me if the L2TP connections ever worked properly :)

And finally - the most important change:
    • Reverted Wireless Driver to 5.10.147.0 in all RT builds
The decision to revert the driver was taken after exhaustive tests and reports from many
people, the conclusion I came to is that this driver gives better performance and less hassle than 5.10.142.0.

dkirk - thanks! The credit for adding these mods goes to Augusto (Teaman)

The "Route Modem" option is cool, it allows us to get rid of firewall scripts to access the setup pages of e.g. a bridged PPPOE ADSL modem, via the router. I regained some precious NVRAM space as a side benefit.

Just enter the IP of the modem in the box, in Basic/Network page. Enter the IP into your web browser to reach the modem. Don't forget that the modem IP must be in a different subnet to the router. For example - if we use 192.168.1.1 for the router, a good IP to use on the modem is 192.168.0.1.

I flashed the new version, upload speed limit increased from 30k/s to 40k/s, cheers! :(Maybe I will return the router...
I returned it since even I flash it back to stock firmware, it is also limited..

I am running 7483.2, I'm not sure what benefits the 7491 have over this, I don't quite understand the Route Modem feature.

You can reach your adsl-modem settings page through your roter, set roters ip-number eg 192.168.1.254 or what your modem has.

When i upgrade from version 7490.2 to 7491, can i just backup all settings from 7490.2 or is it not recommended?

    Modem router IP

On cable modem I can access it directly. My understanding of the real advantage to the router IP setting is for folks who have the kind of system which has 2 modems.

  8. dkirk

    dkirk Network Guru Member

I believe the modem has to be on a different subnet than the router, doesn't it? In my case I merely moved the modem to 192.168.0.1 and left the router at 192.168.1.1 and all works great.

    Toastman,

So going forward the RT-N firmware will be the only one supporting Fedor's work with simultaneous dual band drivers, Also is their a RT-N 1.28.7491 version with the latest updates and Broadcom Wireless Driver 5.100.138.9 in the works?

    Thanks,
    Pharma

  10. Toastman

Toastman Super Moderator Staff Member Member

pharma, no that's not *quite* right. The E3000 and other routers don't actually need the N driver to run simultaneous dual band. The N driver is only really needed for the E4200 and a few others, because the older 5.10.142.0 and 147.0 drivers can't handle it's 5GHz radio, that's all.

Yes, there will be RT-N versions probably tomorrow, when i have time to finish it off. And I may well add a few more bits at the same time :D

  11. pharma

    pharma Network Guru Member

Thanks Toastman! I forget the 5 ghz radio is different on the E3000 (300mbps) and the E4200(450mbps). No need to rush with the RT-N version since all is well.

    December 4 2011 - Toastman-RT-1.28.7492 BETA and all variants
    • Added CPU % usage to Status Overview page
    • VLAN-GUI: include E4200 port mapping
    • Improved readability of labels on IPTraffic graphics
    • Udpxy v1.0-Chipmunk-build21
*** New Experimental Feature from Teaman ***
    • IPTraffic conn/BW ratios graphs
      • connections and bandwidth distribution per IP address
      • based on qos-graphs.asp
      • limited to 11 addresses
Note: The E4200 wireless driver is somewhat experimental but it does get that router's 5GHz wireless working. Some people have found it to be slow or unstable and opted to use normal versions on this router and forget about the 5 GHz radio. But many others have found it pays to persevere with setup details and have found it to work OK for them. So be careful and don't give up on it if at first you have some problems.

Please don't use the "N" driver versions for other router models. There's no reason to use it unless you have a model that actually NEEDS it for the 5GHz radio.

I like the CPU usage %. It is a lot more 'readable' than the CPU load. The usage is a lot more mainstream and more people will understand it . Please do not get rid of the CPU load as that is more accurate over a longer term. Nice mix by having both available.

The graphs... I like them. Some time ago I had put in the 'Feature Request' forum for a way to tell who is using what percentage of the total bandwidth. This is not exactly what I had in mind, but is it works.

If one thing could be added to them, have a reference to your QOS total defined bandwidth. The chart always adds up to 100%, but could only be using 15% of the TOTAL available bandwidth as defined by QOS/BW limiters. This would provide additional information quickly at a glance. You could see if you are at saturation of your total WAN bandwidth. I would continue to have it all add up to 100%, but have an additional line that shows QOS max inbound/outbound limit and a percentage of usage. With this you can see what different IP's are using, you could tell that they are only using 75.4% of the total available inbound/outbound bandwidth. Conversly, if you are at 100%, you could then drill down into the graphs to see what they are doing and maybe adjust the QOS rules to lessen the impact.

Suggestion on the user limits: Make #1-#10 the top users and the #11 slot the aggregate of the remaining users and the bandwidth used by them. That makes it a quick and easy way to see who is using the bulk of the bandwidth. Adding more colors/users is just going to create a confusing mess.

  15. Toastman

Toastman Super Moderator Staff Member Member

Mercjoe - thank you for the feedback. That's a very good suggestion particularly about the user limits, keeps the graphs clean and still gives the most important information. I can see a problem while looking at my users, as the instantaneous useage varies hugely from one moment to the next, one web page may open a great many connections and then disappear for 10 minutes while the client reads the page. With 120+ users doing this ..... :p

Loaded tomato-E4200-NVRAM60K-1.28.0492MIPSR2-Toastman-RT-N-VPN.bin on e4200v1...everything seems to be working well...I had Victek's 0907 build on before...

REALLY LIKE the CPU usage...like to know how the CPU is handling my OpenVPN traffic...

One thing I did notice right way with this build was the DHCP server is not automatically turned on...for whatever reason my wireless kept cycling until I gave my Mac a static IP, and then turned on DHCP in the router. I didn't have this problem with Victek's build...

  17. Mercjoe

    Mercjoe Network Guru Member

DHCP server is turned off by default in Toastman builds. Been that way for a LONG time. Always set up a static IP on your computer when you flash and clearing NVRAM. Turn on DHCP when re-configuring.

More feedback on the new IP graphs.

There needs to be continuity from the setting in the 'real time' and 'Last 24 hours' graphs. If you have selected to hide an IP on one interface, it should not show up on the ip graphs as well.

They should also show IP and Hostname on the graphs page. Again, for continuity of interface.

    Hi Toastman,
it seems that loading of site pages is faster with
    tomato-E3000USB-NVRAM60K-1.28.7492MIPSR2-Toastman-RT-VPN.bin
    than with
    tomato-E3000USB-NVRAM60K-1.28.0492MIPSR2-Toastman-RT-N-VPN.bin.

Yes, it would be. In future, I'm quite probably not going to provide RT-N builds for anything except the E4200. It's causing far too many problems with people using the wrong driver for their routers.

    December 5th 2011 - Toastman-IPT-ND MIPSR1 Kernel 2.4 version 1.28.7629 BETA

A new build for older routers!

Now here's a disclaimer. I don't have any older MIPSR1 routers to properly test this with, it's been flashed on an AP only, not tested online. While everything seems to work, what you see is what you get. If there are any real problems with it, that means I may have difficulty fixing them. If it turns out that it's a dog, then I will pull it from the download site.

The build contains pretty much everything that is in the latest RT build. Both normal and VLAN-GUI builds are in the same directory and bear the same version number.

Good Idea. I believe you also might be able to provide a generic .trx firmware files for those who have Tomato on a non- E4200 routers and want to use it. The recent past updates to my E4200 was done using the generic .trx files and the upgrades went smoothly without issue.

Hi, one question, should i set lower values there(for best pings, etc,..):

    Enable Limiter
    Max Download Bandwidth(also used by QOS) kbit/s : 4800 kbit/s
    Max Upload Bandwidth(also used by QOS) kbit/s: 470 kbit/s

Or keep it up with those values(my connection speed is 4960/480)

And another question, do i need to clear nvram when upgrading from 7491 to 7492?

Exactly as the above but has the IPT Connections Pie Chart omitted. Some reported that
this caused excessive CPU useage. If that happens to you then you
    can try this build instead.

    Not sure what .2 does.

I'm showing correct speeds in WDS mode router to router which was not happening with some of the N versions awhile ago.

.2 RT versions not showing E3000 ext version, .1 does.

    Will check tomorrow for clarification.

jsmiddleton4/bucher - there was a mistake in the readme file. I have corrected it - .1 has the new commits, and .2 is the one with the IPT pie chart removed. [A few people PM'd me to say their router was struggling with the graphs, showing CPU loads over 1, so this will allow them to use the router normally while we wait to see if this is a problem with the pie charts or not. Teaman says The IPT pie charts are rather "experimental" at the moment.]

    Hi there!

    I use Toastman's release: tomato-ND-1.28.7628.1-Toastman-VPN kernel 2.4 on WRT54GL v1.1

Today I just noticed that IP traffic isn't showing monthly usage for November. It just shows for December. And only for 6zh and 7th of December. Which is kinda odd. Router has uptime 11 days, 23:56:29 Which includes November and December. (That's when I upgraded to toastman firmware from tomato's default firmware)

I use CIFS. And here is the configuration for IP traffic monitor:

And when I do ls -la for shares on a server:
    Dec 7 11:05 tomato_cstats_687f749cfca9.gz
    Dec 7 00:03 tomato_cstats_687f749cfca9_1.bak
    Nov 25 22:06 tomato_cstats_687f749cfca9_2.bak
    Dec 2 00:35 tomato_cstats_687f749cfca9_3.bak
    Dec 5 14:38 tomato_rstats_687f749cfca9.gz
    Dec 4 23:38 tomato_rstats_687f749cfca9_1.bak
    Dec 3 23:38 tomato_rstats_687f749cfca9_2.bak
    Dec 2 23:38 tomato_rstats_687f749cfca9_3.bak
    Dec 1 23:36 tomato_rstats_687f749cfca9_4.bak
    Nov 30 23:34 tomato_rstats_687f749cfca9_5.bak

And if that's not enough odd I checked Bandwith monitor: It only shows REAL TIME. If I go Under Last 24 Hours, Weekly or Monthly I get a message:
If I choose Daily I see just empty without any messages:

So I tried to restore IP Traffic monitor's file: tomato_cstats_687f749cfca9.gz which was created Today at 00:03 but It won't load any Novemer's stats nor from December before 6th :S

Then I tried to restore for Bandwith. It asked me if I want to restore. I clicked Ok and that was it. But I could still see The rstats program is not responding or is busy. Try reloading after a few seconds

Just like the data would be somhow wiped. Or not properly saved on CIFS in the first place? Is there something wrong with my CIFS configuration? Am I not saving IP traffic properly? Also how can I save IP traffic stats every Hour? It seems in my case it didn't save every hour

P.S. Just in case here is the screenshot of "successfully" mounted share through CIFS:

    frojnd Networkin' Nut Member

After reboot, Bandwith -> Monthly and all other subsections of Bandwith works:

However IP traffic monitor. Doesn't. :( After reboot It only shows for 7th of December.

    Toastman,

I decided to give the 04xx version a try again. Not sure why but WDS tx/rx are reporting correctly.

Since a few people have said the IPT graphs are running their router's CPU load over 1 continuously, I have marked those two builds 7492 and 7492.1 (and variants) as beta for the time being, so anyone coming to download them will go for the later one if they don't wish to experiment. It doesn't happen here though, so let's see what other reports we get.

7492.2 and variants just omits the IPT pie graphs.

Okey, I have solved this problem. It was clk-speed issue. The strange is in overwiev and CPC frequency show 480Mhz
but when I do "nvram export --set | grep clkfreq" that show "nvram set clkfreq="" " and after set right speed in CPU
frequency, speed comes back and Samba speed is normal.
EDIT: If "nvram set clkfreq="" " is default where is default settings read from ?

Wrong thread ... open your own thread on main page .... "Restore Default Configuration" or "NVRAM Erase" should help with your problem.

I updated from an older build (from 6 months ago) to the latest for my RT-N16 just now. Everything works but I can't use SFTP to transfer files any more. SSH works fine but attempting SFTP gives this error on the client: "sh /usr/libexec/sftp-server: not found"

Any ideas what changed since then? I saw this mentioned earlier in the thread but no one replied

I don't know which build you choose to your RT-N16. But you upgrade from and realy "old" build I recomend to do a

Yep I did that. It was probably less than 6 months old really.

It seems dropbear is looking in the wrong place for the server. I have openssh-sftp-server installed through optware which was working perfectly before.

Okey then I should only load most needed config and test with that.

Just tried and I can connect with SCP but not SFTP (looks like SCP support is part of dropbear but it's looking for the SFTP server binary in the wrong place)

I could fix it with a symlink but I can't create them in the /usr/ folder as it says "read only file system"

    Any other ideas?

I'm using a Cisco E2000 router with v1.28.7489 MIPSR2-Toastman-RT K26 VPN firmware, but I'm running into an issue with QOS. It seems as though the QOS rules are applied to everything else except for an OpenVPN connection? (I'm assuming the other types of VPN are affected as well)

Because of this, it makes it quite difficult to try to effectively use QOS while someone is connected via VPN. Thoughts?

    December 9 2011 - 1.28.7492.3 (stable build)

    + all variants

    1) Revised CPU clock set, prevent CPU clock defaulting to 133 MHz

    2) Fix issues with 'disappearing' WL ifaces (when not assigned as part of any LAN bridges)
    • related to assignments of VLANs, LAN bridges and WL interfaces on Advanced/VLAN (advanced-vlan.asp)
    • any existing WL interfaces not assigned as part of any LAN bridges would simply 'disappear' from any/all web admin/UI pages (after saving settings on advanced-vlan.asp and rebooting)
    • try to ensure any/all previously configured WL interfaces are still properly detected, even when not a member/part of a LAN bridge (therefore, available to be selected and/or re-assigned via the web UI)
    3) IPTraffic: user interface/experience improvements
    • improved consistency/continuity for some of the user-set/dynamic preferences common between different IPTraffic pages/graphics (i.e. filtered/hidden IPs)
    • unified prefix/cookies storing most settings common to IPTraffic Real-Time and Last 24h graphics (i.e. active/hidden tabs, average calc, etc...)
    4) Fixed default path - dropbear config

WARNING - DHCP IS DISABLED BY DEFAULT. DON'T FORGET TO TURN IT ON IF YOU NEED IT.

Hi there. Again problems with Toastman's tomato-ND-1.28.7628.1-Toastman-VPN kernel 2.4 on WRT54GL v1.1 Not that I solved previous issue.

My problem is that I enable through web interface Remote web access. I chose https and port 8998. I also forward the same port to 192.168.1.1 (router's ip) I saved and went to other location. The problem is, I can't access router through web service. I try https://rotuerSexternalIP:8998 and all I get is: Unable to connect

I went by to the old stable standby 7483.2. 92.3 reporting in the Status screen my interfaces were Down. Wireless filters in WDS mode started acting weird, shutting people out who didn't need to be, etc. All is fine with 7483.2.

I noticed the same for the 0492.3 build. Both eth1 and eth2 intefaces show as down, but are not. As a side note, have gone back to the RT-N builds again for my E4200 and (after a few different configuration changes) have been working great, so will be sticking with them for now.

Yeah I'm getting this too. Wifi shows as "down" but it's up and everything is working fine.

I missed a small error in the merge concerning that W/L Interface display. But I'm also reverting dropbear to the previous build and removing the IPT Pie Graph for the moment. I'll post an update soon. Softcox, if you could recheck, would be useful?

Sure thing. Is there an issue with the current dropbear?

  68. Toastman

Toastman Super Moderator Staff Member Member

I don't think there is really any problem with dropbear. However several people seem to be having problems with ssh access, and this will enable them to figure out whether it is a problem with dropbear or it's something else. If there IS any issue, it may be with the way I upgraded it, so I want to revert it and check everything, then maybe do it again next build.

Is clearing NVRAM recommended everytime you upgrade, like from 7492.3 to .4?

    Thanks guys.

If im not mistaken, when you load config file. You restore all the nvram settings you had before you cleared nvram including all thoses from the previous version of tomato. In my opinion if you clear NVRAM you should enter all settings fresh (manually). That way you know there arent some obsolete variables still hanging around from the previous version or worse even some settings that have had there values changed or location since the last version.

.4 here. Seems to be ok. Status show "Up" now. WDS filters seem to be ok. Only added a few for a couple of clients to make sure. No problems noted so far.

Hi all. Is anyone else having problems with Bandwidth Limiter?
I've create two lans and set each one to different vlan. With the first lan (br0) limiter works fine, but when I'm trying to set limits to the other (br1), I get "IP address outside of LAN". I' m using this build tomato-E4200USB-NVRAM60K-1.28.2492.3MIPSR2-Toastma n-VLAN-RT-N-VPN-NOCAT.
Thank you, and keep up the good work.

I would assume that you would just go to your router manufacturer's site and download their latest firmware and save it to your desktop or downloads folder then do the usual "router pinhole reset - 192.168.1.1 Admin Upgrade Firmware - Choose your manufacturer's firmware and tick nvram erase - perform the upgrade - pinhole reset again - reconfigure the router according to your manufacturer's instructions".

Are you sure its safe way? and what is "pinhole reset" its 30/30/30 ? So i don't need to do this tutorial http://www.myopenrouter.com/article...-the-NETGEAR-WRN3500L-Without-A-Serial-Cable/ (even it doesnt work, because erase linux command doesnt work) ?

And 1 question about toastman tomato 7492.4, why there aren't graphs?

What's a good stable version of Toastman to use on an ASUS WL-500gP v2? Is tomato-K26USB-1.28.7821MIPSR1-Toastman-ND-Ext.trx OK to use? I don't need VLAN or VPN support.

    Thanks!

    @Toastman,

No issues with 2492.3 and seems to work well. I know your firmware upload is automatic, but was there supposed to be a 2492.4 for the RT-N's? Just checking and no issues if you decide to skip deployment.

    Thanks,

Do you think I will see any improvement in file transfers between wireless clients? My laptop will be on the 5ghz and my wife's will be on 2.4ghz. Right now with both of us on 2.4ghz the transfer between us is terrible, it almost makes me think I'm doing something wrong.

  89. pharma

No problem. Actually it's probably a good idea to hold off since no major issues.

"Do you think I will see any improvement in file transfers between wireless clients?"

That depends. Your file transfers will be limited to the slowest link in the chain. Is it possible that connecting at higher speeds will speed up your file transfers? Sure. That is why we are motivated to move to faster connections and why getting those faster connections is a priority. Why we don't settle for what we have at the moment IF we can connect at faster speeds.

If the two computers are connecting to each other, which is possible, you eliminate variables and see how fast you are connected. You could even do hard wire connection between the two.

But in general yes, you will transfer files faster with the faster protocols assuming all pieces of the communication chain between the two laptops also supports the faster protocols.

However some file transfers still take time. Often easier, simpler and faster to use a thumb drive.

I guess I was assuming that since both clients are on 2.4ghz currently, file transfers are slow because the wireless radio has to receive/send the data at the same time on the same radio, while having one on 5ghz and one on 2.4ghz would alleviate this issue?

Howso? Having two clients sharing the same radio transferring files communicating half duplex vs two clients with there own separate radios communicating should be faster.

This is probably the issue in most cases -- different conditions will ultimately impact the end result. One person on the Cisco forum complained he was able to connect at 300 on 2.4 ghz with his "old" WRT160N using a Dell laptop with a dell 1510 mini wifi card (Broadcom), but could not do it with his "new" E3000.
Cisco responded it could be due to 2 conditions:

I guess this is where the Linksys RT-N options for "Interference Mitigation" and "Wlan Auto with Noise Reduction" come into play and help alleviate some of the noise and interference encountered, but not all of it.

@Bucher -- hope this helps with your answer.

Hello I worke on this since week and no success ...

in the log I've always :

    Dec 15 23:16:35 RT-C0C1C0884CDC user.debug init[1]: igmpproxy terminated unexpectedly, restarting.
    Dec 15 23:16:35 RT-C0C1C0884CDC user.err igmpproxy[20697]: There must be at least 2 Vif's where one is upstream (count 1, upstream Vif 1).
    Dec 15 23:16:35 RT-C0C1C0884CDC user.info kernel: vlan2: dev_set_allmulti(master, 1)
    Dec 15 23:16:35 RT-C0C1C0884CDC user.info kernel: vlan2: dev_set_allmulti(master, -1)
any idea? I don't know if it's linked or not ... do I have to activate something else on the router ? it's look like to port is not listening ...

"Having two clients sharing the same radio transferring files communicating half duplex"

Because sharing the same frequency does not set either to half duplex.

Not sure why but after disabling ARP binding in Static IP section all clients are way faster. And I mean quite noticeably faster. Still have IP's assigned, just turned of "Enabled".

    Wireless is half duplex.
