Tofu/Thibor wish: more QOS fields

QoS seems to work quite well, it's impressive. I have been using the low/medium/high/highest scheme and it's addressed all end-user perceived speed issues on my home network.

Well, that and putting some upload throttling on P2P programs. Ironically, doing that also increases overall P2P download speeds.

Anyway, I end up having a bunch of prioritization I'd like to do: DNS, Skype on two different computers/ports, http, https, various IM services, various mail approaches with a bunch of ports, two VPN approaches with a bunch of ports, and PC/Mac/PS2/PSP gaming. If I really want to set things up so that everything is prioritized, I'd need double or triple the number of QoS Application Priority fields.

So, I'm just posting a public wish asking for more QoS Application Priority fields in Tofu/Thibor.

A public thanks to you as well. Keep up the wonderful work, and the HyperWRT team, your stuff is amazing. It'd be nice if Linksys encouraged this sort of thing further with routers with slightly more CPU, flash, and RAM.

Gotta second that one. I just ran out of fields. Though I have everything I could possibly need for the moment. ;)

I'd love to see this set up as progressive, so we can just keep adding up to some reasonable limit.

One scheme I used was to start with devices. For example, my VoIP MAC address gets HIGHEST. My laptop and ReplayTV get MEDIUM. My desktop (which runs P2P) gets LOW. That way, everything works very well but the desktop. Then I take the desktop and prioritize the few services I use that need low latency, like DNS lookups, web browsing, FTP, email, etc. Set those all to MEDIUM.

I've never had a connection problem with IM, but using GAIM I could set those to use a port I've already set good priority for. I use Yahoo, ICQ, MSN, and AOLIM on both the desktop and laptop, and I never get a disconnect or noticeable delay. So, frankly, I wouldn't waste port setups on those. ;)

My setup (in Tofu 12) looks like this, in case it helps you out at all:

It is taking full advantage of my very limited 256K (measured at 200K) upload cap, supporting P2P, VoIP, multiple silultaneous VPN connections on the laptop, GOBS of simultaneous IM connections some over VPN and some direct to the Internet, a ReplayTV, and two computers.

NateHoy, you can actually get back some fields in your situation by removing the "Low" entries. The default appears to be "Low" for all unspecified traffic so there's no reason to specify any QoS entry as "Low" with the current firmware. Think of "Low" as "Normal".

And while we're on the topic of wishing about QoS...

It might be nice if we had a "Lowest" setting for traffic that genuinely should be of lowest priority, such as P2P.

Or, if that's not possible, perhaps just changing the default to "Medium" for all unspecified traffic could also help. That way we could still prioritize "Low" P2P below everything else, and still have "High" and "Highest" for prioritization.

i've added preset fields for HTTP, HTTPS, DNS, FTP, POP3 & SMTP as well as the 12 user definable fields. this i think, is enough. i've also previously changed the default priority to Medium,

You're correct, of course, I could reclaim a few fields by dropping the three P2P fields. But I'm just trying to lend a supporting hand at getting some more fields for you out there. Stop fighting it. (grin!)

Um... what can I say? Thanks.

When do we get to see this new version?

And, if we were moved by your work to give a gesture of financial support, how might you suggest we do that?
