I am having trouble reading this and understanding. I am using Victek's mod based firmware on x.23 The ND version to be exact. I found out with this particular firmware and for ND releases in general. To get full power off the channels. 1-8 need to be used for the U.S. Currently I am on 3. I heard 1 6 and 11 are the best. 11 will not be used in my case though. I scanned around my house walking all around inside and stepped out of the front door. This is what it found.

Is it possible to use channel 1 or 6 with out any issues? If so. Which channel do you advise to use? My network in that picture is FattysGoneWild thanks guys.

If you use 1 or 6 is already in operation by other AP.. then.. use channel 11

I was trying to avoid using 11 since it does not allow full power. No problem though. If that is what you advise. I will change it. Plus it is kinda like a fair trade off. Lose some power but I will get less interference from the looks of things.

    p.s.

When changing channels. Is clicking on Save settings good enough? Or do you suggest a reboot of the router as well?

save after select new channel, the router reboot itself.

Since channels 1, 6, and 9 are already taken, I'd say you using channels 3 or 4 is just fine. The 1-6-11 rule is only so you don't have significantly overlapping signals, but in your case, that can't be avoided.

Channel 11 doesn't allow full power? I hadn't heard that. Where did you read this?

(This could explain some of the problems I've been having; that's why I'm curious.)

All of the signals you are picking up are pretty weak and quite probably aren't anything to worry about anyway. The strongest is "stvnray". Moving up one channel to 4 would give slightly less interference. otherwise just use channel 6 - see below.

Comment: Your jpg shows your reception of the router varies by almost 30dB and jumps around a lot! I haven't seen such a big variation in any of my installations.

    TIPS.

    1) If you get a signal from another channel overlapping onto your router's channel, the router cannot decode it and sees it as noise. It degrades the signal to noise ratio on that channel. Also, since your router doesn't know what it is, it transmits over the top of it. One of your clients MAY receive both signals, which will jam each other, and data may be lost.

However, if you deliberately place your router on the same channel as the interfering signal, it will now be able to decode the signal, recognising it as a valid wifi signal and NOT noise. So it will wait for it to finish sending before transmitting data to your client. The result is LESS interference and often a better throughput.

For this reason, in the situation where there are a lot of access points around and no way to avoid them, the best plan can often be to put your signal on a channel where there are STRONG signals, but not too many of them.

So you might try channel 6 anyway. It'd be a good experiment.

    2) It's generally considered that only 3 non - overlapping channels (1, 6, 11) are available. However, people often neglect to mention that channels 1, 5, 9, 13 also give very little overlap and are often used in European sites where many AP's are required in the same building.

I went ahead and switched it to channel 6.

I was walking around all over the place at the time. But you are right. It does spike up and down a lot. The laptop is in the next room across from me. Usually the door is shut and it has to go through 2 walls. Maybe that is why? Maybe my power transmit level is to high? Currently at 70mW. Even when putting it down to 42mW and 28mW. Strangely I still see the same results. I also might note. In Tomato under the Quality level. I can literally see it go from 50 to 35 in seconds and then climb back up. It varies so much by going up and down all the time. Apparently that is normal. But not so sure in my case since it is constantly doing it.

Think I found the problem with all of those dips. I think it looks good now?

I changed the transmit power from 70mW back to Tomato defaults of 42mW and seen pretty big improvements.

The green line is more typical of most paths. However the purple one is now also jumping around a lot and is very ragged. Unusual.

The green and purple is from the stvnray network around me. Mine is the red. Unless I am reading it wrong?

I seen what you mean now. I had to change to another channel. My internet got extremely slow all of a sudden in the evening. Switched to 11 and it is fine. The purple line now is just like the green when switching to channel 11.

Sounds good now. If you are resigned to using the lower power on ch 9+, then is there any reason not to use channel 13? That would clear almost all of the interference from myquest7129 on Channel 9. It looks like it would be your own private channel....

I live in the U.S. Channels 1-11 are the only ones that are legal. It would be nice to use my own channel. But dont want any one knocking on my door if you know what I mean.

I am currently looking more into it even though what I said before this post. My understanding is it is just a FCC thing and no body will actually come to the door. What would you advise for a country selection? Currently set to U.S. since that is where I currently live. You still suggest channel 13?

Ah, you are a U.S. resident? Well, I wouldn't encourage you to break the law. It probably wouldn't make that much difference anyway.

Details on enabling all channels are in the same post as before.

Sounds good. I will leave as it is channel 11 U.S.
