Tomato flash for Asus RT-N16

I retired my Linksys WRT54GL (flashed with Tomato 1.16) and replaced it with a Trendnet TEW-639gr. The Trendnet has very limited QoS options, and doesn't support any open source firmware, so now I want to replace it with a router that will allow me to flash with Tomato. I'm seriously considering the Asus RT-N16, which includes two USB ports. I had no problem flashing my WRT54GL, but have some questions about flashing this Asus router: (1) Would I first have to flash it to a version of DD-WRT and then flash to Tomato 1.28? (2) With the USB ports, would I have to get it on Tomato 1.28 and then flash it to TomatoUSB, or would the USB ports be fully functional on 1.28 without the additional upgrade to TomatoUSB? :help: Thanks for your input.

Thanks, damwill. Based on the router reviews I have read, it looked like a toss-up between the Asus RT-N16 and the Netgear WNR3500L. I am leaning heavily toward the Asus because it has antennae (which could be replaced if needed) and it just looks like it's more configurable. I just wanted to make sure the router's USB ports would be useable, and if I understand correctly, TomatoUSB will ensure that.

Thanks for the replies. Sounds like the Asus router is a better choice than the Netgear ... may have to tell my wife that's what I want for Christmas! Anyway, it sounds like I can upgrade the firmware directly to TomatoUSB, which is needed in order to be able to use the two USB ports on the RT-N16 (?).
