Thanks thor, I just need to utilize VPN in my network :)....

However, Tomato 1.25.8515 .7 v6, is ok to use for my Asus WL-520GU (16/4mb) as well, right?

Sorry I've been used to Victek's mod... It's the first time I'm gonna try yours... So many choices, it's a bit confusing for me :(

    EDIT:

Bummer! I thought 1.25.8515.7 v6 has USB support.. nevermind

I win some.. then loose some..:frown:

Well, i dont have a Asus router, only 2 4mb flash routers, beside that fact, i may tell you... your last v6 4mb 1.25 release was in fact the best i ever tried, is rock solid, and the memory ram has not been affected by the load, i hope this reconfort you, and i already said i hope you continue your work with the 4mb routers. Im really impress the stability and reliability of your latest release so far, congrats!

thor, just downloaded the your mod with optware.
i wanted to try first on a 2Gb USB flashdrive but this one is currently formatted to 2 partitions, linux swap and ext2 for data.
do i have to reformat this again into a single ext2 partition since there is already swap space auto initialization?
    thanks.

afer enable Enable Optware initialization script(disc0_1) and save
then Optware installation script(disc0_1) and save again takes abaout 1~2 min depending on your connection upon compleation on the usb(refresh) page the checkbox will deselect
then just login into ssh and write ipkg install rtorrent

Thor, can you remind me what to put in Dnsmasq Custom Configuration (for general use), if anything? I seem to remember a while back there was the need to specify the size of the table and possible something like log-async, but something tells me the need to do this manually was removed during some update.... Thanks.

    Hello!

I have a SD-Card mod on my WRT54GS and I installed your new Firmware-Mod because of the FTP and Optware support with Web-Frontend..:
    Tomato_RAF_1.25.8515 ND USB .8 v2 ..

I tried to search for the SD-HC-Mod entry in the Web-Frontend but I didnt find it... Can I use the USB Menue entry for my SD-Card mod ??

Or is there a USB-Port Mod for the Wrt54GS v1.1 available? That would be awesome...

    Thank you very much?!

    Thank you...

I wanted to ask if its possible you include the SD-Card Mod in your new Firmware?!

One SD-Card Mod Release and one USB-Mod Release of your new firmware-Mods...

That would be awesome. I was really looking forward for FTP ,samba , NAS, and Optware support with SDHC Driver. Maybe also Web (HTTP) Server like httpd with Webfrontend?

Is there any Chance you could implement the SDHC-Card Support in your newer Firmwares?!

    Tank you in advance..

Plug the flash drive into a linux box, unmount the drive (since it gets automounted), then run "gparted" as root.

BTW, I cannot get the optware to work for some reason. I created a swap and ext3 partition on flash drive, but after enabling the features, I still get "-sh : ipkg: not found", after reboot of course. I also tried disabling/re-enabling through check boxes, but still get the same error.

Yes I do read before enabling, so please drop the attitude. It's not helping! Honestly I am thinking about dropping your firmware because your support for it is not worth the time for beta testers like me. If you honestly want some positive feedback, try to be accompanying to the users who are trying to help you get your firmware working properly and easily, so that we don't have to ask the same question over and over to annoy you!

and i posted at least 2 times how to make it work... YOU NEED A STORAGE DEVICE FIST PARTITION EXT2/3 and a swap partition

    ring any bells?

  40. i1135t

    i1135t Network Guru Member

I know you are doing this on your free time. I am grateful that you are contributing, but if you plan to offer something to the community, please expect to support it somewhat. If you read you own thread, you will see that hapahopi and I both posted that we both, on separate occasions, tried to get it working and you gave no feedback other than, RTFM. That is the kind of attitude that will put anyone off to even look at your mod.

This is an open forum for third-party SUPPORT. If you don't wish to provide a little support, please do not offer it anymore. I am sorry to offend anyone who wishes to see this mod evolve, as do I, but if the person who creates it does not wish to support it to the end users, then I see no future in it in the community.

This is all I have to say...

I would appreciate if such discussion would be made over PM...

Such discussion made public is not good for anyones image.
Btw. Don't answer now "He started this discussion" "nonononono He started this discussion, I am an Angel" ;-) ...

It would really be nice if you could stop this discussion so we all could concentrate on real problems regarding this firmware-Mod....

Sorry for my bad english... But I think you understand me ...

thor2002ro is offering the Firmware for free, and also the support .
I think if youre asking him in a kindly way he will answer you with a good tone..

    Btw. OnTopic:

Is there a way I could implement the FTP , NAS,OPTWARE (with Webfrontend) etc. Support easily on my own in the SDHC-Firmware? I thought like extracting the Webfrontend and core from the newer Firmware regarding the features I would implement in the SDHC-Card mod and then implement it...?! (only an idea)

    Thank you in advance

Could I ask one small favor? When you post a new version on the first page of this thread, could you also include the date. It's easier to see: "Oh look, a new version was just posted last week", than to compare two long strings.

Upgrading v2 to v3 will require an NVRAM erase? Sigh. That's the one thing that's going to delay my installing this.

Thanks for adding the dates and for answering my questions so quickly.

    I'm just curious.

#1) Is there any documentation anywhere on setting FSB? The web seems to have a lot more info on overclocking the CPU than on overclocking the FSB.

#2) Was there a particular reason for changing the default for DNS caching? Was this a bug fix, a personal preference, or something else?

  52. thor2002ro

    1) fsb is needed to OC the WL500gP at elast v1.... you dont need it on WRT54GL

    Hi thor2002ro,
I just loaded up your mod .8 v3 firmware and have managed to install ipkg packages just fine. My minor observation is that the Optware installation checkbox is still enabled contrary to what it states that it is disabled after being run ONCE. I'm thinking it might be more of a browser related problem (FF 3.5.1).

    Some observations/suggestions/questions:
    1. PRE-MOUNT: I noticed in the oleg firmware tutorial that e2fsck runs as pre-mount to keep the file system checked. Is there a possilbility to run this pre-mount script in this firmware also?

    2. PRE-UNMOUNT/CLEAN UNMOUNT: Once optware is initialized and the packages are running, if i want to remove the USB device i cannot unmount it from the tomato interface since it says the device is busy and applications are using it. What script can i put in the "Run Before Unmounting" section so that it closes ALL running packages in init.d?

    3. Now that optware packages are available, hopefully other members can contribute their experience with these packages, e.g. what are the most useful packages to install much like what's been discussed in the Oleg forum/tutorials.

I still have a long way to go in understanding scripting and the optware system but this firmware has opened up a whole lot of possibilities. Thanks.

  59. thor2002ro

    thor2002ro Addicted to LI Member

you have "Run after mounting" and "Run before unmounting"
you can't unmount it while you have you have optware on.... you have to kill all the programs and unmount /opt

    hey thor!
i've found a rather lightweight (at least in comparison to "our" version of the daemon) snmpd - it offers only a few select functions, but more than enough for our logging needs.
i found it while browsing the openwrt repositories; it's called mini_snmpd and is available here: http://members.aon.at/linuxfreak/linux/mini_snmpd.html

i took a shot at compiling it (the Makefile is very accomodating about crosscompiling and options), that went through smoothly, but executing it leads to errors, specifically:
    Code:
    # ./mini_snmpd
    *** Unresolved: siginterrupt
    Segmentation fault
as it's an insane reduction of required space (920KiB->~75KiB), i thought you'd maybe want to take a look at the source and check out whether you can get this thing working.

would be pretty cool imo. :)

the 4mb mod is kind of dead for now... but it does include all the updates...

it should work just fine... you can install torrent clients with ipkg , the ram usege is about 18-20mb of ram free. your best bet is to make a backup of all your settings on oleg, then try the mod if you dont like it at least you can go back to oleg

ps: take a look at the usb mod on this forum there you shold be able to find all the info you need related to the usb

    Newbie optware installation help

    Hi,

Have finally gotten around to trying to install Optware. Can someone advise a Linux-newbie without Linux how to format the USB disk to prepare it for optware installation. I understand it needs to have 1 x ext2/3 partition, and 1 x "swap" partition.

I have read the previous answers to this question but I do not have any Linux boxes to use, I have only Mac OS X with driver software to format & read/write ex2/3 partitions. But I don't understand how to format a "swap" partition. I can create and format ext2/3 partitions but don't understand how to set one as the swap. I can use the OS X terminal, but am not sure whether it contains the same formatting functionality as in Linux.

Alternatively is there a way to do it via Tomato itself e.g. via the Execute System Commands page or telnet or SSH?

    Sorry for the dumb questions....

  74. thor2002ro

    thor2002ro Addicted to LI Member

create an empty partition and use mkswap in tomato... you can even create ext2/3 partition from tomato check mkfs.ext2 , mkfs.ext3

  75. occamsrazor

    occamsrazor Network Guru Member

Thanks Thor, I will read up on mkswap... one question - what would be a reasonable swap partition size to start with? And does it matter if it is the 1st partition or 2nd partition? I'm currently using a 1GB usb drive.

    e sugest fist ext2/3 second swap(i sugest about 256-512mb)

  77. occamsrazor

    occamsrazor Network Guru Member

OK I think I got the usb drive partitioned correctly. I created 2 partitions in ext2 format, then in Tomato used the mkswap command then swapon command on the second partition.
The following would seem to suggest that the swap was made & is being used:

    Code:
    root@Tomato:/# cat /proc/meminfo
total: used: free: shared: buffers: cached:
    Mem: 31387648 19243008 12144640 0 888832 6262784
    Swap: 425672704 0 425672704
    MemTotal: 30652 kB
    MemFree: 11860 kB
    MemShared: 0 kB
    Buffers: 868 kB
    Cached: 6116 kB
    SwapCached: 0 kB
    Active: 7864 kB
    Inactive: 3252 kB
    HighTotal: 0 kB
    HighFree: 0 kB
    LowTotal: 30652 kB
    LowFree: 11860 kB
    SwapTotal: 415696 kB
    SwapFree: 415696 kB

and the Overview shows "Total / Free Memory 435.89 MB / 423.18 MB (97.08%)" but in the USB page under attached devices it says:

    Code:
Partition 'partA' ext2 (565 MB) is mounted on /tmp/mnt/partA
Partition 'disc0_2' swap is not mounted

...so perhaps it isn't correctly done.

I have the "Optware installation script(disc0_1)" and "Enable Optware initialization script(disc0_1)" boxes checked, hit save, but when the page refreshes both boxes are still checked.

Am I doing something wrong? I see this in the logs:

    Code:

Partition 'partA' ext2 (565 MB) is mounted on /tmp/mnt/partA
Partition 'disc0_2' swap is not mounted

its good the swap status doesnt change... just check total memory

the "Enable Optware initialization script(disc0_1)" remains on
Optware installation script(disc0_1) has to disable ....
dont refresh it imedietly give it 2-3 min depending on the internet connection can take longer...

and use automount option , restart and see if swap is enabled and try the optware again

PS: i will make a wait box in the next version... when that will be... I'm just busy with other programing projects

there seems to be a bug with wds in 1.25.8515.5 as some of the time stations wont associate properly. Changing to vicktek 8515.2 was the only was to resolve it.

I have automount checked. It seems that when rebooted the swap isn't used as the RAM totals revert to 32mb. If I send a swapon command they are used, but it doesn't last after a reboot.

The Optware boxes are both still checked, so it doesn't seem as if it is installed....

Is the swap partition supposed to be listed as "mounted" in the status? Because it never is, even after successfully using swapon.

    Any ideas?

occamsrazor after update to my fw did you clean nvram....?
    swap status doest change....

i think i found why optware is not working on you...
i just noticed that partition is mounted to
"Partition 'partA' ext2 (565 MB) is mounted on /tmp/mnt/partA"
what are the names in /mnt ? the optware initialization and install looks for /mnt/disc0_1 .... why yours is partA ? you put a label or somthing?

i dont know what is your swap problem.... maybe you made more than 1 swap partion by mistake... that could confuse the swap initialization...other than that is perfect...

write in ssh "fdisk -l" and post results

    what version 1.25.8515.5 ? i dont have 1.25.8515.5....

it's .7v6 - although it says 8515.5 at the top  Either way, the wds in the 7v6 thor release is buggy :hmm:

Thor... you were right about the partition name... I repartitioned the usb disk using partition names "disc0_1" and disc0_2"... and the Optware installation seems to have succeeded as the checkbox is now off.

The swap still isn't used though unless I manually issue a swapon command.... When I do it seems to be used, but still not shown as mounted. Here are the results of fdisk -l :

    Code:
    Disk /dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/disc: 1037 MB, 1037565952 bytes
    255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 126 cylinders
    Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
    /dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part1 1 77 614940 83 Linux
Partition 1 has different physical/logical endings:
         phys=(1023, 254, 63) logical=(76, 142, 57)
    /dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part2 77 127 398254+ 83 Linux
    Partition 2 has different physical/logical beginnings (non-Linux?):
         phys=(1023, 254, 63) logical=(76, 143, 1)
Partition 2 has different physical/logical endings:
         phys=(1023, 254, 63) logical=(126, 35, 63)

I guess I have probably formatted the swap partition wrong or something... Perhaps it would be better to create the partitions in Tomato using the fdisk or mkfs.ext2 commands but despite reading up on it I can't work out the parameters...

    Thanks...

heres your problem... /dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part2 is not seen as a swap partition by fdisk... theres somthing really wrong there... i sugest you get a ubuntu livecd install gparted if its not present and repartition everything except part1 as swap , no logical partitions... only primary

Urgent! Help my 500gP v2 bricked after flashing latest firmware

    Thor, help!!

I newly bought a WL-500gP V2 (with mod 64mb RAM), I upgrade with Asus restoration utility from oleg 1.9.2.7-d-r473 to Tomato_RAF_1.25.8515 ND USB .8_snmp_vpn_v3.trx. The router's 'air' and 'power' leds goes out immediately after the flash and wait for a long time without change. The LAN led (the one attached with a cable to the PC) still lights. Tried 30-30-30s recovery but the Power LED never lights up again even after power down/up (appears cannot enter recovery mode anymore).

How can I recover? If Jtag needed, pls let me have more detailed steps.

    Help!!!

    * Step 1: Connect your computer via ethernet cable to a LAN port on the router (I used LAN port 1) (MANUALLY SET IP ON THE PC)
    * Step 2: Unplug the power cord from the router
    * Step 3: Wait 20 seconds
    * Step 4: Press and hold the reset button on the back of the router. Note that the reset button is recessed and you need a pen or paper clip to press it in. The button protruding from the back is the EZ Setup, which is not what you want to press.
    * Step 5: While holding the reset button, plug the power cord into the router. Continue to hold the reset button until the power light starts flashing. Let go of the reset button
    * Step 6: Use tftp to transfer file to the router.
    * Step 7: Tftp should report a successful file transfer.
    * Step 8: Wait ~10 min and restart the router

fail at step 5, the power light does not light up at all instead of flashing. Actually the power button does not light up anymore no matter whether the reset button is pressed after the flash.

I have having permission issues with my external USB HD. I enabled USB support with
    - Core USB Support
    - USB 2.0 Support
    - USB Printer Support
    - USB Storage Support, NTFS, and Automount

I see my device properly mounted under storage -

Partition 'disc4_1' ntfs (953867 MB) is mounted on /tmp/mnt/disc4_1

Under File Sharing, I selected Read/Write for "Auto-Share all USB Partitions".
Under Network Shares List, I set Read/Write for root$ and my share is set to "/mnt/disk4_1" and access level set to Read/Write.

I can connect to the HD via SMB, but when I try to copy something over I get the error message "You need permission to perform this action disc4_1".

Any ideas on how to resolve? Thanks.

i disabled rw for ntfs some builds ago because with this old driver you can endup with corrupted partition..., I will port ntfs-3g driver when i get some time...
i the mean time you can either make an fat32 partition(if you dont need files 4gb and bigger) or format it ext3

thanks for the response! I was scratching my head for over an hour on this issue. Good to hear that I didn't do something wrong. I guess I'll wait for the updated build.

I just bought a WL-500gP V2. I don't really -need- another router, but had a moment of weakness when the price dipped a bit. :D

Anyway, I'm not new to "WRT" type routers but new to the eccentricities of the WL-500gP V2. I had no problem with the first tftp to Tomato 1.23 - changed my laptop IP to a "manual" setting of 192.168.1.10 and "put" the firmware image to 192.168.1.1.

As part of setting up WDS to my main router, I changed the router IP (for example 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.8.4) . Then I decided that I wanted to take another look at the Asus firmware. But when I tried to reverse the process, the router wasn't pinging/listening on 192.168.1.1 as expected.

Turned out it was actually listening on the IP I'd changed it to, the 192.168.8.4 IP in my example. Maybe I shouldn't have been surprised, but I was since my other routers use a hardwired address for this. In my case, I reset it back to 192.168.1.1 then the process worked as before.

Anyway, just an FYI for anyone else, might want to reset it to the IP back if you can or at least be aware to try whatever you last set it to.
