    I recently used transmission 2.13 and then 2.22 for a couple of weeks on optware & tomato usb. I don't remember a single time it crashed and everytime I had to use killall to stop it.

    Code:
    CFLAGS="-Os -Wall -DBCMWPA2 -fno-delete-null-pointer-checks -funit-at-a-time \
    		--param large-function-growth=800 --param max-inline-insns-single=3000 \
    		-ffunction-sections -fdata-sections"

    What's up with -DBCMWPA2? I don't think you'll find an ifdef for that in Transmission. ;)

    These:

    -funit-at-a-time --param large-function-growth=800 --param max-inline-insns-single=3000

    I've actually stopped using in my builds because testing without them suggests they were snake oil/wishful thinking...all that's really required to solve the (completely unnecessary and buggy code by the Transmission devs who assume an Intel target platform) alignment issues at compile time is to avoid use of any MIPS-specific tuning (i.e. -mips32). Transmission uptimes in excess of 12 days under heavy torrenting seems to back this up.

    While it doesn't apply to 2.22, if you compile from tip, be aware this flag is now available to configure:

    --enable-utp

    Whether or not you want to make it available is entirely a judgement call, though discussion on the Transmission forum suggests their implementation is at least less broken/more bandwidth friendly than the uTorrent implementation.

    I misunderstanding it before, I mean 10MBs megabytes per second.

    after downgrade it to 043 build and restore same setting with 045 build. My BT client is still crash after while. In fact, my setting only have static IP and WiFI filter. Is that the cause problem?:confused:

  5. GhaladReam

    GhaladReam Network Guru Member

    My guess is you have a setting somewhere that is causing BT to crash, which is still a concern, as I simply must not have that setting set. I'm still running rock solid for 6+ days uptime seeding 20+ torrents on 045 build. I'm also using the RT-N16, same as you.

    If you clear your NVRAM and ONLY turn on your BT client, with no other changes (other than maybe disable wireless completely for security) does it still crash?

    The thin line between firmware and optware

    The other day after choosing from the various editions of firmware i thought why not separate/modularize things? Then I realized I was imagining exactly what DD-Wrt already has...an option to mount any partition as /opt.....(PLUS) and if it contains shibby's transmission & settings html, a sub-tree page appears to setup & run shibby's transmission. That would allow us to switch tomato firmwares without breaking the torrentbox(?).

    The difference between this firmware (which I like) and optware is that it simply works. At least that's the main thing we're trying to achieve by the 'Bittorrent client' page. It's as easy as starting a car by turning the ignition while optware's like jumpstarting a car. : )

    Automation is a superb word. The calculator replaces a set of items like ruler,pencil,eraser,paper,compass & brain. Multiple rows of hot metallic servers is further automated into a single server containing many virtual machines. Once in a while a person finds something difficult to do & decides to make it easier by inventing something, and thus automating it. It reminds me that DD-wrt is one heck of an automation gone wild. It is to routers as cocaine is to humans. Just kidding. I have read the whole 'peacock thread' and more. ; ) Tomato is my Asus.

    Thanks keep replied me. look likes it doesn't relate to build problem. I have cleared NVRAM on 043 build and changing some setting which I think it causes BT crash. I don't want to disable the wireless yet because RT-N16 is my main router. By the way, what is your setting? Thank you.

  13. bkmo

    bkmo LI Guru Member

    DD-WRT will mount the First partition as /opt or /mnt, but not any partition. You have just as much flexibility with Tomato. Tomato is much more powerful as it gives you the tools to setup your mounts in fstab just the way you want them. It is nice to have the options in the firmware, and if they don't suit you then you can disable them and run the Optware versions. As far as automation goes you have the ability to run .autorun scripts from the root of the /opt partition. If /opt is mounted, then the autorun script will start your optware programs. I have an autorun script that detects a firmware reset (looks for 192.168.1.1 IP) then configures the router via nvram settings just the way I want it. I can switch firmware with a nvram reset and be back up and running with my custom settings in a couple of minutes.

    if someone wants... i compiled version 031H on build52 (no dualband support and ipv6, but older broadcom drivers! Added also ovislink 1600gl support)

    Transmission 2.22, RAF and sysinfo by.
    Attention! i remove /mmc directory from root and add /nas and /bkp. Please remember when you will mount harddisc ;)

    On my asus RT-N16 works stable. I someone havent dualband router and doesnt need ipv6 i recommend use this version.

    Hey shibby,

    What can we expect in the future in terms of build 54-based releases? Perhaps, adding Toastman's features as well? At least for RT-N16 users, as we have 32MB of Flash?

    we will see.. Now i am waiting for new release of Teddy_bear, new broadcom driver and full E4200 support :) Maybe we will finish with Victek a Multilanguage features? ;)

    what kind of Toastman`s features have you on mind?

    Hello, RT-N16 user here.

    I just switched to Tomato RAF (1.28.8950 MIPSR2_RAF K26 USB VPN-BT) from dd-wrt and I'm amazed by its smoothness. Got printing and scanning to work over Wi-fi, something I was not able to make it work on dd-wrt.

    I got one problem with Transmission though. Once my download reach around 60mb, it stops with "No space left on device". I checked df and found out it's because of my Temp partition.

    Code:
    Tomato v1.28.8950 MIPSR2_RAF K26 USB VPN-BT
    root@unknown:/tmp/home/root# df
    Filesystem           1K-blocks      Used Available Use% Mounted on
    /dev/root                 6208      6208         0 100% /
    tmpfs                    63528     63528         0 100% /tmp
    devfs                    63528         0     63528   0% /dev
    /dev/sda2             14990392    191544  14037368   1% /opt
    /dev/sdc1            488383484    404556 487978928   0% /tmp/mnt/Share

    As you can see the tmp folder is full, while I got plenty of space on HDD. Is there any solution for this. Is there a way to move the tmp folder to my HDD?

    Thank you,
    eM :)

    How do you set Download directory?

  24. JohnMetsn

    JohnMetsn Networkin' Nut Member

    My download directory is set to /mnt.

    You can set it in the Tomato graphical interface under USB/Bittorent client, or directly in the Transmission conf. The problem is, that download directory (and incomplete dir) doesn't have anything to do with swap/temp directory...

  25. shibby20

    shibby20 Network Guru Member

    you have disc mounted to /tmp/mnt/Share, not /mnt!!

    well change download dir to: /mnt/Share and will be good.

    shibby,

    Some things I've been able to confirm:

    a) Removing -mips32 is _essential_ to prevent alignment problems
    b) The other CFLAGS I mentioned are useless
    c) There is another issue with POSIX signal handling that seems to only affect mipsel, which may be the root of the mysterious issues people are encountering, as I was able to reproduce it and found a *potential* fix (I'm testing it now, but so far it's solid):

    https://trac.transmissionbt.com/ticket/3985

    Apply the suggested change to daemon/daemon.c and recompile.

    I will provide further feedback as I continue to test.

    First, thanks to everyone for this awesome project. I had previously installed tomato + transmission on my Asus RT-N16. That was mostly very stable from a transmission point of view. I even used ipkg to update the transmission to 2.13. Everything working great, even though I am constantly seeding 50-100 torrents at any given time.

    The trouble happened a couple weeks ago. My wireless started "dying." Router would not accept any wireless clients suddenly unless i restarted wireless services. That happened a few more times and I decided to try an update.

    I've tried many of the builds in this thread and toastman's build + bt. The router seems very stable, but transmission always ends up dying. Nothing in var log message, just seems to die.

    I think this has been discussed in this thread a bit. Is there any known cause or at least a place that can give me more info as to what's happening?

    My stability here went from ~85% (which apparently most people consider 'acceptable' for transmission *laughs*) to 100%, no joke. Absolutely huge difference.

    You might also want to consider patching transmission-cli, since it also tends to run for a long time (and would be potentially affected by the same issues).

    The ticket at the Transmission site suggests this is to fix problems with rescans, but from what I'm seeing, it's a "general" fix that works well. Would be very interested in hearing your test results.

    build 047 seems to be running well. Looking forward to the features in future releases. I also noticed that Victek is working on a Captive Portal in his latest beta releases. If this was incorporated (when he releases it) this would truly be a fully featured branch. Also, possibly, for the RT-N16 users, a special build that exceeds 8MB so you don't have to cut features to add others? Toastman's additions would also be awesome :)

    Mine works fine, through port 8080. You may want to check your configuration or firewall.

  44. palmfans

    palmfans Addicted to LI Member

    I don't know what's wrong.

    In the previous teddy_bear built 54, I just enable remote access through port 8080 and set the port forward for 8080 to 192.168.1.1, it works.

    In this build5x-47, the same setting do not work. However, the similar setting for BT client page 9091 work. I can remote access to the BT client web page at port 9091.

    Firewall and routing table just use the default setting.

    Could you share your configuration.

  45. GhaladReam

    GhaladReam Network Guru Member

    You shouldn't need to set a port forward when you enable remote admin. Simply by enabling it and choosing a port on the admin page, it will automatically set a rule to forward to open that port on your router. So, whatever your WAN's IP address is what you'll use to access it remotely, with whatever port you chose.

  46. Toastman

    Toastman Super Moderator Staff Member Member

    Tomato has been changed so that it now listens directly on the WAN port instead of through port forwarding. So your port forward is likely stopping it from working.

    To acces your router from your LAN by using a web address you also need to set NAT LOOPBACK=ALL in Advanced/Firewall page.

  47. palmfans

    Thanks a lot. After deleting the port forward, the remote admin is now working.

    I installed the patched version. It is definitely more stable than the previous versions. My transmission stayed up for 3 days where as prior to the patch it would only stay up for a few hours.

    Unfortunatley, it transmission-daemon crashed today with no trace of trouble. I was seeding 20 torrents at the time.

  50. GhaladReam

    GhaladReam Network Guru Member

    Been running build 047 since shibby released it on 4-18, so far 10 days uptime. Transmission has been seeding 14 torrents for those entire 10 days, and still continues to!

  51. rhester72

    rhester72 Network Guru Member

    I'm finding that the removal of the -mips32 compile flag does not appear to be necessary with the patch - Transmission has been stable for 13 days with 60+ torrents here even with the flag.

    It's still memory-hungry - with IP blocking, I'm still in the ~48MB range for transmission-daemon with default connections. I suspect any crashes at this point really are either just flat running out of memory or actual bugs in Transmission.

    Hi Shibby,

    thank you to your great contribution to tomato. I would like to ask one question:

    Does the VPN-BT version (like tomato-K26USB-1.28.905xRAF-EN-MIPSR1-047-VPN-BT.trx) contain all the features from the Ext-BT (tomato-K26USB-1.28.905xRAF-EN-MIPSR1-047-Ext-BT.trx) version?

    Currently i am using Victek's BT-version (which should be the same as one of your earlier releases). I am considering to update to a VPN version, but i dont want to loose the "Ext" features (which I assume contain everything from TeddyBears Extra edition).

    Thanks in advance

    AFAIK, shibby's naming structure mirror's teddy_bear's. Meaning, VPN-BT contains all the features of Ext-BT, in addition to VPN. Correct me if I am wrong.

    Hi Shibby,

    I would appreciate if you can upload source as tar zip file just like Victek

    Thanks

    Thanks a lot. In the meantime i also found the explanation on the TomatoUSB side (guess i could have looked earlier)
    However after installing the VPN-BT version i have noticed that the IPv6 settings are missing from the UI. Is that because I installed the K24 version? If yes, is there a way to include IPv6 in K24 builds?

    One more finding - looks like removing -mips32 is necessary after all. The failure rate is much lower with the patch, but you can still hit conditions of structure misalignment if it's used.

    I am having some stability issues with the newest release 1.28.0905 MIPSR2-047 K26 USB VPN-BT. I had Transmission disabled since upgrading a few weeks ago and just enabled it today and added 6 torrents about 700MB each and it will work for a about 10 mins or so then just stop working and can't reload the transmission page. I just tried rebooting the router while making this post and after it came back up, I now get:

    "403: Forbidden

    Unauthorized IP Address.

    Either disable the IP address whitelist or add your address to it.

    If you're editing settings.json, see the 'rpc-whitelist' and 'rpc-whitelist-enabled' entries.

    If you're still using ACLs, use a whitelist instead. See the transmission-daemon manpage for details."

    I just cleared the NVRAM about 2 days ago when reconfiguring my network. Is there a way to fix this or should I just reflash the firmware.

    I got the whitelist error to go away I had to delete the .settings folder and I am now testing to see if I can download torrents without it failing again.

    kernel 2,4 hasnt support ipv6. If you want ipv6 support you have to install Tomato k2.6. Not all versions of tomato have included ipv6 support. Try k26-047 build. If it hasnt ipv6 included, tell me please and i will compile new version for you.

    all of the torrents downloaded but the gui stopped responding and I had to disable and re-enable it to get it to work again. I have reflashed the router and cleared the nvram before it did that. Is this just a bug or am I doing something wrong? I haven't seen the available ram go below 90MB. and every time i reboot the router the whitelist error comes back.

    Wanted to report that after about 20+ days of uptime seeding 14 torrents on build 047, I queued up a 4+GB torrent last night, only to come home from work to discover the CPU load at 3.00+, Transmission had crashed and the torrent had stopped at just over a GB. I've since rebooted the RT-N16 and resumed the torrent. Will wait and see if it happens again. Just seems strange that this happened the same time I start a torrent a bit larger than i usually download, after 20+ days of seeding 14+ torrents... Any ideas?

    How large are your normal torrents? I have been downloading and seeding about 10-15 linux ISOs that range from about 700MB to 3GB+ and transmission won't stay up for any more then a few hrs at most. I have been asking about this for a few days now and haven't received a response yet.

    I just flashed build 47 last night and downloaded 2 torrents. 700meg and 1.3 gig. Transmission stopped responding before the two downloads finished. RTN16

    The torrent I downloaded the other night that crashed Transmission was larger than the ones I normally seed. I have 15-20 small (200-300mb) torrents going at all times from private site to boost my ratio. I hadn't downloaded a torrent over 1GB with it since I started using it, this was the first time.

    It seems like it has some trouble handling larger torrents (over 1GB?)

    Also, after rebooting my router the other day, the torrent finished downloading just fine (it had 3GB left hen it crashed) and it has not crashed since...

    in next update i will add "stay alive" option. It will check transmission daemon every 5 min and run after crash.

  67. agentsmith23

    agentsmith23 Networkin' Nut Member

    So that sounds like a workaround that should work but is there a way to actually just fix the problem rather than just putting a bandage on it? Is it an issue with transmission or possibly something with the way it is being run on these routers possibly just a setting that needs to be changed?

  68. shibby20

    shibby20 Network Guru Member

    indeed. But crashes are random. No errors, no logs. I dont know why transmission crash. Once run 3-4 days without crash, once crash after 1-2 hours :/

    "Stay alive" script is at the moment my only one solution.

    Consolation i will add one new option - queuing torrents ;)

    shibby,

    Thanks a bunch for your continued support! Just had a question. Will your next release not only include all the features of Ext+VPN+BT up until now (and also that stay alive option for BT), but also Vic's new captive portal release?

    I understand a "mega" build of that caliber may not fit on 8MB Linksys models, but us 32MB flash RT-N16 users would welcome it :)

    P.S. Transmission has not crashed since that day I downloaded a large torrent... I've continued to seed 15-20 smaller torrents with no issues. I will continue to try larger torrents to see if the issue is isolated to that.

    I will include Victek`s Captive Portal :)

    I will make 2 new buildtype:
    - Big = Ext + VPN + NOCAT + NFS + Static ARP
    - Big-BT = Big + Transmission

    Shibby, it seems there is a problem with the Captive portal function. I just wanted to try it out, it also seemed to work, but according to my syslog it crashes continuously. Even more strangely, although i have a 60 messages per minute limit for my syslog, splashd mysteriously managed to post several errors per second despite of this.

    One more thing what i noticed, that i cant see the nice tomato favicon in the webui anymore

    Thanks for your release shibby! I think however that I'm going to wait for the Transmission 2.30 release, as I don't want to have to update twice.

    Looking forward to it!

    EDIT: So I broke down and updated to build 050.. Couldn't resist!! Still looking forward to transmission 2.30 regardless :) (Actually it looks like 2.31 is out now)

    Thank you shibby20

    Hello shibby20, I registered here just to say thank you to you because of your tomato builds. I used 047 and now updated to 050. The only thing I use is torrent client and this feature works well in your builds and I must say that your firmware works more stable on my RT-N16 than any other authors builds.
    Thank you very much and keep going!!! Awaiting for build with new Transmission!

    molnart, that is normal. It isn't crashing, it is waiting for another process to complete. Turn off your logs!

    Is it necessary to clear NVRAM when upgrading from build 047 to 050? I didn't bother, and now I woke up this morning to 2.00+ CPU load and a crashed BT (keep-alive didn't work). I seed 15-20 smaller torrents 24/7.

    I will try clearing NVRAM tonight and re-keying everything to see if that solves it, I was just hoping I didn't need to :p

    Syntax Help for Advance Configuration for Transmission

    I searched the rest of the forum and the posts in this thread but I can't see to find the right syntax for setting a watch-dir setting on my Asus RT-16N running Victek RAF Ver. "1.28.9054 MIPSR2-beta-041H K26 USB Ext-BT"

    Here's what I placed in the "Advanced Settings > Custom configuration" Section of the Firmware. My Directory I wish to watch is the Download Directory at "/tmp/mnt/NAS/Downloads/":

    Code:
    {
    "watch-dir": "/tmp/mnt/NAS/Downloads/",
    "watch-dir-enabled": true
    }
    Alternatively I tried this syntax as well:

    Code:
    {
    "watch-dir": "\/tmp\/mnt\/NAS\/Downloads\/",
    "watch-dir-enabled": true
    }
    In neither circumstance did the code provide the desired function. In fact the addition of these Custom configuration settings makes the Transmission Daemon not respond until the code is remove and the services are restarted.

    Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance to the community and again I apologize in advance if this has already been addressed. I just couldn't find any posts. :biggrin:

    050 seems to be working well for me. Thanks for the great work Shibby. One thing I have done lately is to add "echo 128 >/sys/block/sda/device/max_sectors" to one of my .autorun scripts. I would lose my USB drive within a day or so with I/O errors. It is now staying up for days without error by changing the max_sectors. Maybe you can add this to the build?

    release build5x-052 :)

    Changelog:
    * bw limit: fix udplimit for MAC
    * Captive portal Port select
    * if Captive Portal is off, other options are disabling
    * Added few CFLAGS to configure transmission
    * upgrade libevent from 2.0.10 to 2.0.11

    BTW If someone want test Transmission 2.31 - firmware for mips2 is in k26/testing directory. I had to remove jffs and transmission-create tool because image was to large.

    Thanks for the speedy release cycle shibby. Now i am bit too lazy to flash a new firmware so i think ill wait until Transmission 2.31 makes it into a stable (and Victek also promised a new release).

    I have an idea regarding Transmission: as it seems that the with new versions the firmwares will exceed the 8MB RAM, maybe it would be possible to store the Transmission binaries outside of the Router's flash. The real added value of your BT builds is the handy web configuration interface, and anyone using Transmission on his router has some kind of external storage connected.

    So the idea is the following: the firmware would include the configuration interface, but not the Transmission binaries themselves. These could be downloaded directly from the webui, and would be installed onto an attached usb storage drive. This way you could still keep the firmware size below 8MB, but make the new transmission version accessible to anyone. No idea about feasibility tough...

    PS.: What is Tablica?

    its a good idea. I was thinking about this. I can make a choice between included binaries and optware. You can choice transmission from optware and have manage vi gui. If transmission will still grow up i will have to make this.

    btw tablica = board with information for users :) You can send message to user or block him internet and redirect all his connection to your information web like "Internet blocked: please pay ;P ".

    If you want try, here is my tutorial:

    Hi Shibby20,
    What wireless driver version you use in your compiled image:
    1. 5.10.56.46
    2. 5.10.147.0
    Last time i checked you use 5.10.56.46.
    Why don't you use 5.10.147.0?

    LE: Ok thanks for the answers, i updated my router

    Could you make this build with these features left in? RT-N16 has 32MB of flash, so it should more than be able to handle the image.

    bkmg, are u using the sd-idle-2.6 tool (http://tomatousb.org/forum/t-271603/sd-idle-2-6-disk-idle-spindown-program-for-2-6) by any chance? I have noticed that running the tool in the background results in swap write errors on my usb flash drive

    well personally i have no problem to run it with a script, but of course having a nice menu option for it would be awesome. just please make sure that it can be disabled, because on flash drives is seems to cause some data corruption

    No I am not running sd-idle. I have been logging to the disk drive (one less script now with the new logging additions) so it never would stay idle. :) With or without sd-idle i was getting errors and losing access to the disk. Changing max_sectors to 128 works like a charm. With all of the new additions from Shibby, all I am running under Optware is sftp-server for ssh access to the drive.

    shibby, the mod for custom log file path is a great addition. When you turn it off by unchecking the box, though, can you fix it so that it reverts to the original path?

    Thanks!
