Transmission/Basic Rate

I share my internet with a neighbor across the street. Works decently well, but only 80-90% of the time.

Since we're only sharing the internet, we don't need high transmission rates, as 1 Mbps would be totally sufficient. All we're looking for is a constant connection.

Question: On the WRT54G, you can select Transmission Rate, a drop down box from 1-54Mbps or auto. -- Would our connection improve, if I dropped that transmission rate to 1Mbps or 2?

Question 2: How about "Basic Rate" setting.. All/Default/1-2 Mbps. Would it improve with 1-2 Mbps setting?

Question 3: Any other setting suggestions? Frame burst? CTS Protection mode? Beacon interval? DTIM? Frag threshold, RTS threshold? (I've seen threads on these settings, though. Might as well spark discussion again.)

And yes, no need to suggest bigger antennas .. I've got a 18db mounted outside, and he's using a 6db on his end, on his adapter. I'm using HyperWRT with the transmit power at 84mw, as well.

Well, it's been a couple of weeks with no reply .. bump. Maybe someone will stumble on this at some point and have some insight.

make the beacon interval 50. then try to see and set the transmit rate @ about 12mb see if u see improvments. and try to change the mode a b mode that might help. what is ur signal strength on both sides urs and the neighbors

Also make sure someone else isn't broadcasting on the same channel as you.. Then if you both are using G devices, maybe broadcast in g only mode. if not, then maybe b only mode. In general I have had issues with the same channel being broadcasted by a neighbor, once I changed, it went away.

    Good luck...

    is ssdi broadcasting on?

SSID broadcasting is on .. My beacon interval was at 25 .. we'll try 50 if that's suggested. The client on the end is 802.11b, so I've set the router to B only.

And I have done scans to see what channels are being used around us .. No surprise, 1 6 and 11 are used all over the place .. mostly 6, though, as that's the default for most routers.

Hey I am a noob too. You said that you were able to choose the transmission rate (1-54mbps or auto). Where can you do that? I must have missed something.
