Unable to access QNAP

Apology's for my ignorance, but I am fairly new to VPN's, so I probably have something set up wrong, or some setting not turned on/set-up.

    My setup:
My broadband router connected to Linksys E1200.
Connected to my broadband router is satellite set-top tv box (wifi - working fine), and a QNAP (wired)
Connected to my Linksys is a NVIDIA shield box (wired) with kodi on it.
Ignoring what I do or not do with kodi, I have video files on my QNAP that I want to watch via kodi, but I also stream content in kodi.
Streaming content works great, but I can't seem to get it to play local video files. I also, cannot access the QNAP server page on my laptop. I get the following error message:
This site can't be reached, 192.168.0.12 took too long to respond. ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT

Previously I had IPVanish on my NVIDIA Shield, and just disconnected from it whenever I wanted to play local content
I thought by connected the QNAP to my broadband router, it would bypass the VPN on the Linksys, unless as I said, I have something set up wrong.

I hope someone can help me with this.
