Upgrade from HyperWRT 2.0 to Thibor 15c?

    Hi,

I've been a loyal HyperWRT user for a couple of years, and I'm currently running HyperWRT 2.0, the last "stable" version from Avenger. I've been very happy with it, and get great reliability.

Today I found out that the "original" version from Avenger has morphed over the past 1 1/2 years to the 15c version from Thibor, with quite a few features added.

My major reason for originally going to HyperWRT was to get greater reliability than the original stock Linksys firmware, and to get better access control filters (I have two teenage kids!!!). By and large, version 2.0 is doing that for me. However, I do have occasional "lockups" in network access (perhaps every 2 months or so), which I generally attribute to Comcast problems. I reboot the router and things generally go back to normal.

So, my basic question is threefold:

    1. Can I expect greater reliability in 15c than I am currently getting in version 2.0?

    2. Are the access controls better developed than version 2.0 in terms of blocking access to specific websites, p2p networks, AOL IM, etc, on a PC-by-PC basis, including time schedules? (Sorry, but it's a bit tough to deciper exactly what the access controls can do from the features page!)

    3. I use a VPN to get into work from home, and want to make sure that isn't going to break! Will it???

Basically....since things are so good, and I don't want to break anything...I want to find out if there is a compelling reason to change at this point.

    Thanks,
    Bob

tbh if something works, you generally dont fix it. you cna always take a working backup of your config. (use this ONLY on that version of hypwerWRT your using), try thibor15c and see what you think.

things have changed in it and if you read the forums (not just this thread) you'll see the vast majority are happen with 15c and it is stable as any other firmware.

    1. Can I expect greater reliability in 15c than I am currently getting in version 2.0?

maybe, maybe not. however source code and may fixes including security fixes would have been implemented in new firmwares than yours.

    2. Are the access controls better developed than version 2.0 in terms of blocking access to specific websites, p2p networks, AOL IM, etc, on a PC-by-PC basis, including time schedules? (Sorry, but it's a bit tough to deciper exactly what the access controls can do from the features page!)

Access Restrictions are about the same, though there should be more entries than your version maybe, however you could use iptables/startup and firewall scripts to set what you want.

Depends entirely on YOUR setup i suppose. only testing this yourself will tell you.
