USB scanner?

Hello, I've just purchased an Epson scanner (GT-S50N great product btw!) , it is sold as "network ready" that in Epson terminology means: traditional USB interface plus external Edimax 1208Mgf print server with 802.3/11 interface. After 2 days tweaking it up it actually worked but I'm not satisfied at all as e.g. if by any chance either the print server or the scanner is power cycled the windows software by design according to Edimax, doesn't reconnect the network USB port and I need to manually interact with the software :-(

I was wondering... can I use an access point with USB interface to replace the current Edimax?
    My questions are:

    1) I know that e.g. teddy_bear mod supports printserver and NAS, does this automatically involve scanners too?

    2) How do I mount the "network" USB port under windows? Edimax has its own software so I guess there must be something not vendor related out there...
