the clue is in the title but basically I'd like a recommendation for a webcam for my router
I dont think there is any stable tomato firmware which has been tested with flawless operation of a directly connected USB webcam with realtime video/audio stream transmitted.
The hardware in USB based routers is , I guess not considered powerful enough to process realtime audio/video streams.
Hardware compatibility is another area , look at the original tomato (Teddy_Bear) post you might would get some clues from there.
I know that some work is being done on webcam support. I would imagine that the only sensible approach would be to implement the so-called "driverless" webcams that comply with the newer UVC standard, and I believe that is what will be supported. I suggest you always buy one of those. To actually use the camera would presumably need MJPG server software running on the router too. It will be interesting to see if the RT-N16 can cope with the CPU overhead.
ahhh, that's some interesting reading, I didn't know anything about the UVC thing. Cheers, will look in to it
