using a WAG54G V2 and a WAP54G to connect to an XBOX

Can I use the a WAG54G V2 (UK) and a WAP54G to connect to a xbox? somethink along the line of the xbox connecting to the WAP54G using the Lan Port of the back of this device and then using the wireless network to connect to my WAG54G and then the internet.

    Hope this makes sense?

    Cheers

    Hi,

No way because Wag 2.0 doesn't support yet WDS (Wireless Distribution System).
Only Wag 1.2 with 1.02.7 firmware can do that !

Is WDS in the works for an upcoming firmware? If it is, I'll hold on to my WRT54G, but if it isn't I have no use for the wrt.

I have a WAP54G v2 running Firmware Version: 1.00.47 and a WAG54G connected to my xbox. No problems connecting. WDS is not required as the router is using passthrough not wirelss distribution to allow the connection. Its straight forward and simple no setting changes were required took me less than 10 minutes to do

Woah, it suits me well. I have a WAG54G v1 running (still) 1.01.6 that i might upgrade to 1.02.7 then.
But can I use a WAP54G in WDS mode then? And do I need to upgarde the firmware of WAP54 too?

    Cheers,

it is not supported yet but if i understand well it will be in the near future, at least that's what i understood from other forums.. but apparently linksys can't even fix regular bugs so i am thinking it is goning to take a while before it does support it..

also linking your wag directly with your xbox will work but not as you suggested. you need a wired link. unless you got the gameing thingy of linksys ofcourse..

if you still have to buy it you can rather buy a second wap then buying a game thing since once you have more then one wap you can do what you want. or should be at least

Yes upgrade your WAG, 1.02.7 is not too bad (nothing is good with Linksys...)
I don't know for your WAP but if you already have a WDS option in it, that's good.
You only have to put in one the wireless MAC address of the other one.

    Thanks HiSpeed,

Indeed WDS works perfectly with 1.02.7 (won't say the same for WAG54G). I have a ASUS WL500G and I am using it in a hybrid mode (AP & WDS). Now I am covering every corner of my house.
    :thumb:

    Quick question:
now that I have 2 WLANs in the house, will the laptop be able to do "handover" automatically from one WLAN to the other, like with the mobile phones, or do I have to do it manually when I am moving around in my house?

    Cheers,
    VT

In each AP you must set the same channel but for SSID you have 2 choices. Either you set the same SSID or you set 2 different SSID. With the last one you can choose/verify the right AP from the laptop !

I did indeed put 2 different SSID in order to identify which WLAN my laptop was connected to.
I have the impression once that the laptop has switched from one WLAN to the other automatically. Probably it lost its initial connection because of the weak signal, and by re-scanning, picks up the stronger signal then.
But it is not a seamless "handover" as in GSM.

It's not an impression, that's works like that !

The WAP54G can be used as a Client AP if you have V2. In Client AP just place the MAC address of your router(gateway) and you're set. Mine works perfect for xbox.

    WAP54G AP Client MODE

I've a WAP54G Wireless G Access Point v.2.0 (2.08 firm.), I put it in the second floor of my building.
In the first floor of the same building I've a ADSL line.
What I want to do is to put a "Wireless Access point Router with ADSL Modem embedded" to be able to connect to Internet (wired) on the first floor and also to be able to connect to Internet (wirlessly) on the second floor.

As a Wireless Access point Router with ADSL Modem embedded can I use the WAG54G v.2.0? (with the WAP54G ap mode setted to "AP Client")
    If I can't use the WAG54G v.2.0, can I use a D-LINK DSL-G604T?
I read in the forum that a guy could do it with a Dlink DI-524 (that's only Wireless Access Point Router, without ADSL modem embedded.. see http://www.linksysinfo.org/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=8287&highlight=wap54g).

    Thanks.

ps: I need to buy Wireless Access point Router with ADSL Modem embedded to take out the ADSL modem of my provider.

To do that, you need a "Wireless Access point Router with ADSL Modem embedded" as you said, supporting WDS (Wireless Distribution System).
Until today, WAG54G 2.0 has no WDS menu, only WAG54G 1.2 with firmware 1.02.7...
For the other hardware, you have to check...

    Thanks HiSpeed.

Do anybody know a "Wireless Access point Router with ADSL Modem embedded" with WDS support?

HiSpeed, I'm thinking to buy the WAG54G 1.2, but I'm not sure because of many bad threads I read in Internet about it...what
    do you think about it?

    Thanks to all.

Don't do that, this product is a lemon !
I regret my choice, and I'll not buy Linksys anymore.
I'm angry with this company not capable to provide correct firmwares.

The WAG 2.0 appeared at the beginning of this year, and now 9 months later there is no WDS yet and the other Linksys AP (WAP, WRT, etc.) are not compatible... it's absolutely crazy !

Take care because there is no WDS detailled specification. Consequently, each manufacturer implements WDS as he wants and the products are not always compatible...

I'm very surprised, an other person reported me the same thing that Cwegga told us...

WDS seems not required on WAG 2.0, if you set the WAP in AP client mode, obviously in using the MAC address of WAG...
