Using a WRT54G to extend range on an existing WLAN

I have an SMC BArricade 2894WBR. It's just not getting it range-wise. I live in a townhouse, router on ceiling in basement...no other choice. Barely get signal all the way upstairs...house is stone construction. I got a WRT54G to replace the SMC, installed Alchemy, set antenna power to 120 at the suggestion of another user here. Still getting poor signal strength.

Question: Why can't I place the WRT54G somewhere on the 1st or 2nd floor where it has good contact with the SMC, then make the computer all the way upstairs and my laptop find the WRT54G...to hep extend range.

I just made a donation, I want someone who can give me the Kindergarten explanation of how to accomplish this if it's possible.

AFAIK this is only possible if your other router supports WDS
