hi, ive been using the WRT54G for a while now, but would like to setup a linux router instead. i was wondering if it was possible to completely disable all the routing features on it and use the WRT54G as an AP only?

    firmware version 4.20.7
    hardware version 2

    thanks in advance

i would like to get a hand on the workings of iptables and run other things on that box for my network, maybe a squid proxy server and a dns server

all can be done on that little blue box with the right firmware.

i feel more comfortable making a solution out of a linux machine rather than screwing with the router like that, and im planning on have a twenty - thirty gig cache, which i dont think the little guy can handle

so any ideas on that? i tried disabling the firewall and dhcp, then setting it to use a static ip with all the information that it needs. then i changed the mode from gateway to router, and still no luck..

Try this, reset the WRT54G to factory default setting.
    1. disable the DHCP of your WRT54G
    2.Enable your exsitting router
    2. plug your exsitting router to your WRT54G's switch port NOT the WAN (internet) port

    It should work :)

allright thanks, but i tried that and its working, but not the way it should. i can ping all the other boxes around my house, and they can ping me back. i can even access local services, but anytime i try and surf the web, or sign into aim, etc it cant find the server. when i try and ping wan clients, like google, thehost does resolve though....im baffled
