I cannot seem to block ping response in v.22r.2. I have checked "Block Anonymous Internet Requests" and loopback is disabled. The router is WRT54G v.2.0 connected with PPPoE DSL .

I test by pinging my public IP address from within the network. I assume that ping requests go outside.

Any ideas what I am missing? It used to work with HyperWRT firmware.

You will be able to ping from the inside, but you shouldn't be able to from the internet. This is what I see. From work I cannot ping my public IP, but I can from a host inside my network. The "Block WAN requests" or "Block Anonymous Internet Requests" policy is only applied to the WAN interface.
