v2 or v5 WRT54G preferred for dd-wrt conversion?

Hi, I've posted this question in the dd-wrt thread, but thought I'd try it here as well. I would appreciate any guidance on this issue.

I have two Linksys WRT54G routers, one is version 2 and the other is version 5. I would like to create a wireless bridge using WDS to connect my old iMac (no airport capability) downstairs to my wireless network upstairs.

My question is: which WRT54G should I use as the AP, and which as the client? Here are the details of the routers:

Version 2 - upgraded to Linksys firmware version 4.21.1 using WPA-Personal. It's currently the upstairs AP, but I can change that.

Version 5 - Linksys firmware version 1.00.6 set to factory defaults. Serial number begins with CDFB, so I'm not sure dd-wrt is an option.

My guess is to upgrade the version 2 router with DD-WRT and use it as the client, as it is the more powerful router, but I'm not sure. I'm a relative newby to these routers.

    Thanks.
    Tom

Why not convert both of them to DD-WRT? Use the v2 router as the AP.

    Slimey,

    Thanks for the reply.

From what I've read, converting the v5 router is a more difficult and dangerous process (potential to brick router is much higher). I've also read that certain v5 routers (those with a serial# beginning with CDFB like mine) can't be converted. I'm not sure how old that information is. Maybe newer versions of dd-wrt will work? Can anyone confirm?

I'm doing this for my kid's preschool, so I'd like to do it as simply and safely as possible. I don't want to brick their equipment, or I'll be donating more than just my time ;-)

    Thanks. Tom

I have two Version 2 units, brand new, purchased for a project that was never done. What download should i use to upgrade the power (I plan to hook two of my houses together, separated by 1/2 mile, using directional antennas) and set the SSID to my ham radio callsign (extra class) and put the units in the amateur spectrum (presumably a low channel number). I'm sure the answer is here somewhere, but would someone who knows just post a summary of preferred firmware for this version of the WAP54G V.2 units? Thanks.
