V23 SP1 with built in ad-ware????

Discussion in 'DD-WRT Firmware' started by dellsweig, Jan 26, 2006.

    From the DD-WRT V23 SP1 01-26 changelog:

google adsense added to the firmware (please discuss in the forum if you dont like it)
firmware downsized a little bit again
httpd code bug fixed (causes crashes under some not direct reproducable conditions)

I am not very happy about the thought that my router is communicating with google.......

This is very disconcerting. Advertisiments on a web page is one thing. This is bad - there are no tools - as on a desktop to control this.

I am very disappointed in this direction DD-WRT looks to be taking

On the other hand, BrainSlayer is open to discussion on the matter.

Quite a lot better than my prior dealings with James Ewing at SveaSoft.

Did you already look at the existing thread about this?

The mere fact that after all the history in WRT development that there is the discussion of imbedding nothing more than ad-ware in router code worries me.

The fact that BS posted a way to "turn it off" worries me even more...

The fact is - there is ad-ware imbedded in the binary

We have all come to expect ad-ware and advertising to pay for web services like Yahoo mail. We have the choice to perform ad-blocks and the protection of ad-aware like tools.

We have NO SUCH PROTECTION on our firewall/router.

The router is the first line of defense (SPI, NAT).. WHY do this??

Malicious software targets Google AdSense ads

It was only a matter of time before a trojan or virus targeted AdSense or YPM for malicious activity, and the time has come. A new trojan horse discovered by an Indian publisher replaces Google AdSense ads with their own ads, advertising sites including dating, sex, *******and weight loss. This trojan is very recent, because it not only converts regular AdSense ad units, but also the Google AdSense and Firefox referrer buttons into text links.

    Hmmm, for money?

Also I think he said, this was just a test in the SP1-beta, you know the thing that is in the "alpha-unstable" tree? You are hardly obligated or expected to use this firmware. Comment was also made about seeing if this was even worth followup on. Already existing threads on this, comment there.

I find it interesting that folks here get paranoid when they find a port NOT stealthed - blame the firmware for leaving a port open - but allow this code to interact with Google on the WAN side of their gateway router.....

There is NO excuse for this

Just so you all understand what this really is....

    Money?? That was Sveasofts downfall..........

    History usually repeats itself

I'm just waiting for someone to use the word "Nazi"......

    Geez talk about over-reacting!!!!

The thread on DD-WRT is already full of people alternately threatening, cursing, or other what I consider child-stamping-foot behaviour. Totally out of proportion IMHO to what is going on. Because of my bad dealings with James Ewing do I automatically assume BrainSlayer is same kind of person? No, I prefer to assume people are good and wait until they show me they are not. Time will tell.

I find it most amusing the number of people threatening not to use DD-WRT anymore, when they probably never did a PayPal donation to anyone in their entire lives. How is this a threat exactly? Hmmmm.....

Wow, I too am very dissappointed. They should at least make another cry for donations before resorting to something like this.

Maybe you are missing something here...

This is not a hyperlink to Linksys.com or dd-wrt. This is context sensitive advertising. This means data is shared between the source (router) and destination (google)

FYI: I was banned a long time ago from Sveasoft. I was one of many paid subscribers. - Oh yeah - I AM a paid contributer to DD-WRT.

    Dont take this so personally.

Good news: Brainslayer said on the BSR forums that he's taking it out. So it looks like there's no need to worry :cheering:

Many people panicking over something that has not happened yet, probably never will.

"Oh my God, oh my god, the sky is falling!"

When BrainSlayer says, all new final firmware will have AdSense mandatory, that will be different. That is not the case at this time.

Personally I am not too opposed to it. Being a home user I dont feel much to worry about. I have not donated directly to BrainSlayer (I am a poor college student) and this is a way that in some small token I can help out.

Funny thing is I was on the sveasoft irc and they threw a fit when I said I was broke and that $20 was a lot to ask for open software...

Also this is BETA for a reason ; )
