(Very) hard reset

I have a question about hard reset for WRT54G routers.

Linksys, of course, says that to do a hard reset, press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds.

I don't know where I first saw it, but I've seen the following sequence suggested (for example, http://tinyurl.com/yvhr6u):

    1. Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds, after that
    2. Unplug the power; keep holding down the reset button for another 30 seconds
    3. Then plug back the power and keep holding down the reset button for 30 seconds, after that
    4. Release the reset button.

I used that sequence to bring a WRT54G v3 back to life, and it apparently works on other versions.

Linksys, however, says that for "version 5 ONLY" that sequence puts the router into "management mode" http://tinyurl.com/2qb3oe

So, what does the above sequence do for versions other than v5?

After I posted the above, I read through a few more Linksys KB articles. Some articles, without mentioning which version WRT54G they apply to, describe accomplishing a hard reset by:

"Hold in the Reset button at the back of the router for 30 seconds. Unplug the power to the router and then plug it back in."

Apparently a power cycle is part of the reset operation. Perhaps holding the reset button depressed while you do the power cycle has no effect on non-version 5 units.
