Very slow wireless speeds

I've been having a problem with my WRT54G speeds for some time now. I am running the Sveasoft Alchemy software on it (and have been for a long time). My connection (according to windows) is excellent and showing at 54Mb/s rate. When I download things either from the internet or my LAN, my transfer rates in the windows networking properties page are typically under 1% utilization of the 54Mb/s. Again, this is both on my LAN and WAN.

Just a few minutes ago, I was downloading a file on the internet using my laptop (wireless). The transfer rate was like 23Kb/s. While that was downloading, I connected to another machine on my network (wired) and downloaded the same file from the same website at 460Mb/s rate, while the other download was still barely moving at 20-30Kbps.

Is this a common problem? Could this be firmware related? Any ideas of what I could try to fix this? It is just unacceptable at this point.

I'm having a similar problem with that same router. Actually, I'm downstairs from the router, when I first connect to the router, I get about 3 or 4000 mbps, but after a few minutes it begins to gradually decrease until it gets to 100kbps. What gives? Why does the connection detiorate?

I'm guessing you meant 3 or 4 Mbps right?

What firmware are you using? Also, what wireless adapter are you using?

Do you have any wired clients, and if so is the speed good on them?

Hopefully someone can help us out on this. I'm tempted to just install one of the other firmwares to see if that will help out, but I would much rather UNDERSTAND why this is happening (or at least know that this is a common problem with the Sveasoft firmware or this version of router).
