VERY VERY slow speeds to FTP servers

I am experienceing ultra-slow download speeds coming off of FTP servers that are located in good locations and that other people are maxing their internet connections out on. However, I only get 75-100KB off of them, when I should be more than capable of getting 300+KB off of them. Is there some type of setting I can set up in the router to speed up transfers. I'm running a WRT54G version 3 with the latest FW update.

just to confirm that the issue IS the WRT54G have you tried downloading from the FTP site without the WRT54G plugged in?

I have not been able to make a definitive test w/o the router inline due to the network setup here and how much the connection is used. I'm fairly certain that it's some setting in the router config that I changed, didn't see a diffrence, so I went on with life. I've done so many config changes to the router that I can't keep track of what's what. I'm running on 3mbit/384k DSL, so I'd also have to set up some type of ppoe client on my computer. Thanks

Something else comes to mind, are these other users using anyking of d/l manager to maximize there connection? Maybe the ftp server is rate limited per connection but others are making multiple connections at the same time. The other possibility is that when you are using it the connection to the server just happens to be saturated and thats all thats your able to get at that time.
