Vonage WRTP54G and WRT54G

I have searched and tried to find something of an answer in the forums - but didn't quite find what I was looking for. I want to leave the Vonage WRTP54G router alone (have heard of some people getting booted from service after modifying the firmware) and would like to setup an original WRT54G with DD-WRT. I will probably use the wireless on the WRTP54G side in limited fashion and use the older WRT54G for all my primary wireless needs and relocate it to the other end of the house where I have not gotten all areas hardwired yet. I want to basically use this router as an extension of the wireless network and improve on range and security. We use a lot of handheld and laptop applications where it is necessary to update via the Internet.

Has anyone else heard of Vonage "booting" customers for "modifying" their routers?

And what is the recommendation for using the routers in a pair, without reconfiguring all clients, and having a stock OS on one and DD-WRT on the other? Are there major concerns or difficult configurations? Is the original WRT54G even capable of being loaded with DD-WRT? (assuming this is the original as there are no other designations on the label).

Thanks for all your help!
