VPN freezes sporadically

I'm running Tomato Firmware v1.23vpn2.0005, SgtPepperKSU's GUI VPN implementation.

Every couple of days, the VPN just freezes. I have a long-running VPN client running at work, and its VPN connection just goes away. Trying to open a VPN connection from a different machine fails.

If I ssh to the router, I see that the VPN thinks it's running just fine, and there doesn't appear to be anything strange in the logs. If I reboot the VPN
    service vpnservice1 restart
then everything starts working fine, and my work machine is able to re-establish its VPN with no intervention from me.

Has anyone seen anything like this? Any idea what could be going wrong? Any additional logging I could add to the client or to the server?

Odd. Have you checked the logs from the VPN client? It may give a clue as to the type of error.

Only other thing I can think of is to try to connect another client while the router is in that state (try from both inside and outside of LAN if possible). That may also give a clue as to what went wrong.

How exactly do you determine that?
I have a similar problem.. running two clients on the same router, and two separate servers. After a while, machines behind either side cannot communicate with each other anymore.. machines behind the server still get their IPs from the DHCP running behind the client, but all other communication fails. From the server router, I can still connect to machines behind the client (using telnet) so the tunnel is still up and running, and connecting a new machine also works out (until the point when that box also runs into the same problem).

This only happens if I have two clients on the same router though.. run just one and everything is fine (for months).

I was mainly starting this thread just so I'd have a place to keep track of this bug, and to separate it from other general discussions about VNP/GUI.

I don't have the client log for the most recent failure, but will certainly have one for the next time it fails. My comment about VPN thinking it's fine was simply that I didn't see anything in the log file. Next time, I'll hit VPN with SIGUSR2 to see if it has anything interesting to say about itself.

Just a status report. A few days later, the entire router started acting flaky, coming and going sporadically, and then refusing to let anyone connect.

I completely wiped the router's memory and re-flashed it and re-entered all the information by hand. So far, everything is working out okay.

I have noticed this issue before but have not been sure if it was my config or not and have not had the time to investigate further.

I have just scheduled a restart at 00.15 everyday for the VPN servers and clients ( staggered ) - this seems to keep it running
