Vpn Question please

    Can anyone help me please,

I am running a linksys WRT54G with Tomato 1.27vpn3.6 firmware at home, connecting my internet connection to my internal pc's.

What I want to do is to connect to the WRT54G via my iphone 3g internet / wifi connection whilst travelling, and create a secure connection, then route traffic out of the WRT54G onto the internet as my 3g service provider blocks some streaming media ports, and skype.

I am a bit of a noob re network configuration but I think that what I need to use is VPN, I have created a connection on the iphone using L2TP, portforwarded the relevant ports on the WRT54G and used one of the XP machines on the LAN side as the vpn server using Microsoft networking.
This works fine, except that I need to leave the machine on 24hrs.
Is it possible to achieve something similar using the router alone?

If so, is there a simple to follow guide as what I have read seems awfully complicated.

You could do what you want via the router alone with a remote laptop for example, and it works nicely, BUT:

    1. The router firmware you've got uses OpenVPN server, not PPTP or L2TP.
    2. There is no OpenVPN client for the iPhone that I'm aware of....

    Hello occamsrazor

Ahh, that is why I couldn't see any options for pptp in the tomato firmware.

I take it that there is no version that supports L2tp or pptp then?

There was a version of Tomato with PPTP server, see this thread:

...but I'm not sure how easy the PPTP server was to enable/configure etc. Best to ask in that thread.

The alternative would be to use some kind of proxy, e.g. see this thread:

though am not sure how easy to configure the iPhone for that, and anyway I think that may only help with e.g. website blocking, not port/service blocking as you describe.

Hmm, The first link looks a bit difficult to set up, and after googling for a whole evening, here is what I have done.
I flashed the router with DD-WRT v24 sp2, VPN using pptp works perfectly to the iphone, the tunnel is encrypted too, I tried v23 and v24 and the VPN was created but with no encryption, v24 SP2 fixes this.
